Schöningen - "City of Spears" is a town in the district of Helmstedt on the Elm ridge in Lower Saxony The city on the Elm is located about eleven kilometers southwest of the district town of Lower Saxony Helmstedt on the border with Saxony-Anhalt.
background
In close proximity to the world's archaeological sites, this shows Paläon adventure center the Schöninger spears.
Located on the eastern slope of the Elm, Schöningen is the oldest documented town of the former Brunswick country. As early as 748 AD she was mentioned as Scahaningi in connection with a campaign by the Frankish King Pippin. In the period that followed, the settlement flourished thanks to its brine springs and rich salt deposits.
Elm say (From night watchman August Künne, Twieflingen and Fritz Schrader, Twieflingen): - On the Elmsburg, above Twieflingen in the Elm, robber barons used to sit. Their graves lie apart in the Elm, before you get to the castle, on the right hand side. From the Elmsburg there were underground passages in the direction of Twieflingen, Schöningen and Esbeck. Around 1900 you could still walk into these corridors. The von der Elmsburg, above Twieflingen, used to besieged the streets in front of the Elm and plundered the wagons of the merchants who drove from Leipzig to Hamburg. From the monastery of St. Lorenz in front of Schöningen there was an underground passage to the Elmsburg. Through this corridor the knights from the Elmsburg saved themselves in need and danger to the monastery with the pious monks.
