Schöningen - "City of Spears" is a town in the district of Helmstedt on the Elm ridge in Lower Saxony The city on the Elm is located about eleven kilometers southwest of the district town of Lower Saxony Helmstedt on the border with Saxony-Anhalt.

Located on the eastern slope of the Elm, Schöningen is the oldest documented town of the former Brunswick country. As early as 748 AD she was mentioned as Scahaningi in connection with a campaign by the Frankish King Pippin. In the period that followed, the settlement flourished thanks to its brine springs and rich salt deposits.

From the monastery of St. Lorenz in front of Schöningen there was an underground passage to the Elmsburg. Through this corridor the knights from the Elmsburg saved themselves in need and danger to the monastery with the pious monks.
