Shah Alam has been the capital of the Malaysian state since 1978 Selangor. It is located in the Klang Vally in the urban corridor between the state capital Kuala Lumpur and the coastal town of Port Klang.

background

Shah Alam was the first city in Malaysia to be planned on the drawing board after the country gained independence in 1957. There used to be rubber and oil palm plantations here. Today you can find the buildings typical of the planned cities in the region - large residential complexes arranged around the city center with a park and culturally significant buildings. The name of the city came from the then Sultan of Selangor, who named the city after his father: Sultan Alam Shah. His name appears again and again in the names of buildings in the city.
