Siberia corresponds to the Asian part of the Russia. It stretches from the polar regions to central Asia, and fromUrals to the pacific ocean. This space is among the largest in the world, but also among the least populated. Indeed, if Siberia represents 77% of Russian territory (13.1 million km ²) it has only some 39 million inhabitants (ie 27% of the population).
Understand
However, the article concerns the Federal District of Siberia, which is one of the eight federal districts of Russia and excludes theRussian Far East and the region ofUrals West. It occupies a central position among the three federal districts located in Asia, but should not be confused with Siberia which constitutes precisely all the Russian territory of Asia. Its administrative center is Novosibirsk.

To speak
All the inhabitants of the Russia naturally speak Russian. Despite the size of the country, regional pronunciation differences are tiny and a foreign speaker will not hear the difference in accent between a Siberian and a Muscovite. Note on the other hand that Siberia is populated by many different nationalities, most of them having their own language (Yakut, Altai, Chukchi, Buryats etc ...). While young people and city dwellers all speak Russian, the older and more rural generations may have a very strong accent, or even severe gaps.
The English language is tending to democratize (especially among young people and students) and can be found in large cities, especially in Novosibirsk language institutions and clubs providing French, German or Italian courses. However, most Russians have not had the chance to travel outside of Russia, so it should come as no surprise that the level is basic but often enough to break the ice.
It is of course advisable to know how to speak Russian in order to travel with the fewest possible constraints. If you don't feel able to learn Tolstoy's language before you go, at least try to learn to read Cyrillic. Having a record of the phonetic correspondences between Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet with you can be of great help in finding your way in the streets and in the metro (the dual display being absent outside Airports).
