Sinntal is a community in Main-Kinzig district in East Hesse.

Map of Sinntal

background

Sinntal is an amalgamation of 12 communities at the transition from the Spessart to the Rhön, of which, however, contrary to the place name, not all are located in the valley of the Sinn or its tributaries. They are in detail:

  • Altengronau was the residence of the von Hutten family, an important noble family with extensive property in the northern Spessart. Today the place lies sleepy in the Sinntal.
  • Breunings
  • Jossa is a state-approved resort and in the season a meeting place for bikers from all over the country. Jossa is directly signposted on many signposts.
  • Mottgers
  • Neuengronau
  • Oberzell is enclosed between the Seven Mountains (Großer Nickus, Kleiner Nickus, Stoppelsberg, Hirschberg, Stiftes, Haag, Sandberg) and is extremely remote.
  • Sannerz is shaped by the free church community of Bruderhöfer as well as the children's home.
  • Schwarzenfels is best known for its castle.
  • Dying fritz is the seat of the municipal administration and the first place in the Kinzig valley. In September too Kinzigtal totally Sterbfritz fills with countless bicycle travelers.
  • Weichersbach
  • Weiperz is known regionally for its numerous music and singing clubs.
  • Züntersbach is located at the gates of the spa town of Bad Brückenau and is a state-approved climatic health resort.

Historically, Sinntal was primarily important as a stop for travelers passing through, because the Sinntal leads through North-south route Fulda – Würzburg, from the former in Jossa the Sinntalbahn branched off to Bad Brückenau. However, after the railway shifted long-distance traffic to the high-speed line Hanover-Würzburg, which also runs through the town, but no longer stops there, reduced the local traffic to a meager trunk traffic, closed most of the stops and still shut down the Sinntalbahn, the creeping began Decline. Today, like many areas of the Rhön, Sinntal is structurally weak and affected by a decline in population, most likely one orientates oneself on the nearby Fulda and, contrary to the administrative structure, not on Hanau, which is almost 70 km away (well-known saying locally: "The Sinntaler ties a bed on his back when he goes to Hanau").

Sinntal is still interesting, especially for individualists who like to explore on their own and are not shy of contact. The Sinntaler are still very attached to their homeland, practically every district has its own homeland club and most of them are even represented on the Internet with a local chronicle. If you want to know how things used to be in the places you are traveling to, you can do a quick Google search.

getting there

By plane

By train

Regional trains run through Sinntal on the Würzburg Hbf-Schlüchtern route (there connection to the Regional Express Frankfurt-Fulda). There are still two train stations in the municipality today:

  • 1  Sterbfritz station, Bahnhofstrasse 6b. The station is served every two hours on weekends, only during the week irregular, i.a. with shutdown at lunchtime. The waiting hall, which is still accessible (good tip in bad weather!) Testifies to the former importance of the train station, today it borders on a miracle if you see another traveler at all. A train station restaurant is planned in the adjoining building, but so far no leaseholder has held out for more than a few years, there is simply a lack of customers. The train station is centrally located in the center of Sterbfritz, in front of the train station there is a bus stop which is the junction of the (very few) bus connections in Sinntal.
  • 2  Jossa train station. The Jossa station was formerly a stop for long-distance trains (including D trains), but for today's standards the station and all of the railway systems appear completely oversized. The train station has an hourly connection from Würzburg Hbf, probably because the state border is here, because you don't get much further. The train station is very remote outside of the village, there is no footpath into the village, you have to walk on the country road with lorries that is not very busy. In addition to a few buses to the other districts of Sinntal and Bad Soden-Salmünster, there are mainly connecting buses in the direction of Gemünden and Bad Brückenau, Important: these buses may not be used with RMV tickets, not even for the route Jossa-Bahnhof - Jossa-Ort or - Altengronau, instead the bus operator's house tariff must be paid! Since the bus operator is currently Deutsche Bahn, train tickets (not: network tickets) are also valid on the bus.

By bus

There is an hourly connection from Schlüchtern train station to Sterbfritz with the MKK-91 line every two hours on weekends, which is particularly useful when the train is not running. At the weekend, the route is only driven in minibuses, bicycles are not possible.

In the street

Sinntal is not on regional roads. The next connection points are Symbol: AS 49 Schluechtern-Nord on the A66 and Symbol: AS 94 Bad Brückenau-Volkers on the A7, of both you drive 20 km each.

By bicycle

Sinntal is the end point of the Hessian long-distance cycle route R2.

mobility

The municipality of Sinntal officially recommends this on its own website Hitchhikingto get around the countryside. Whether you really should take this tip to heart is up to you, but the fact is that there is practically no public transport outside of school traffic and you are therefore absolutely dependent on your own car.

Cycling is not really recommended as there are hardly any bike paths in Sinntal and you therefore have to share the country roads with car and truck traffic most of the time. Even the Hessian long-distance cycle route R2 is mostly led on country roads in the municipality. In addition, the inclines are sometimes difficult to conquer.

A Motorhome parking space is located next to the Altengronau natural swimming pool.

Churches

Evangelical Church Jossa with the railway viaduct in the background
  • 1  Evangelical Church Oberzell, Kirchberg 5. The village of Oberzell originally emerged as a parish village around the parish church. The oldest houses and courtyards in the village can still be found in the streets around the church, some of which are still used for agriculture. Today's church, which characterizes the townscape and is visible from afar, was built in 1867 and replaced an older, smaller previous building, probably made of wood. Around the church there is a small churchyard and a war memorial that is also worth seeing. By the way, to the south of the church you can find the Linewhich, however, has little in common with its Frankfurt counterpart and where you can not shop extensively except for agricultural products from the farm.
  • 2  Ascension Church, At the old bridge 1. Ascension Church in the encyclopedia WikipediaAscension Church in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsAscension Church (Q22087275) in the Wikidata database. The Ascension Church is the Protestant church in Altengronau. It was created in its current form in 1904, when the old village church was demolished and rebuilt in the course of an enlargement except for the choir room. The church is the last resting place of many members of the Hutten family. The organ, which was built at the same time as the new church was built, goes back to an older work by an unknown organ builder from the 18th century.
  • 3  Evangelical Church Jossa, Spessartstrasse 31. After the small town of Jossa, which was only repopulated in the 18th century, had no church of its own for decades and the inhabitants had to make do with makeshift arrangements, construction began in 1909; a year later the church was inaugurated. The church is idyllically located on a northern slope above the village and, together with the railway viaduct, forms a popular postcard motif.
  • 4  Evangelical Church Züntersbach, At the church 7. In Züntersbach there was a confusing border puzzle until 1863 (similar to the one in the Dutch-Belgian today Baarle); Since the two owners also belonged to different denominations, the small town has two churches today. The older, now Protestant church was built as a fortified church on a hill above the village and has a defensive wall that has been preserved to this day as well as a defensive room with loopholes in the tower. The current nave was built in 1785, the church itself is first mentioned in the 12th century. It was the only church in town until 1879 and was used as a simultaneous church by both denominations, after which the Catholics built their own church. The churchyard within the defensive wall is still the Züntersbach cemetery today; the denominational separation lasted there until 1974.
  • 5  Catholic Church of St. Boniface, Bergwinkelstrasse 6. The Catholic Church in Züntersbach became necessary after the agreement on the common use of the village church was terminated in 1874 and was built just five years later in 1879 in the neo-Gothic style, surrounded by a large parish garden. In addition to the architecture, the church is also worth seeing for its relics from the 16th century.

miscellaneous

  • 6  Sannerz children's home, Birkenweg 15. The children's home in Sannerz was originally a monastery owned by the Fulda monastery and owned extensive land in the region. After secularization in 1802, the monastery was initially empty until Johann August Waldner opened a rescue facility for neglected boys on the site in 1850. In 1896, today's parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built on the site and is responsible for the entire village of Sannerz. In the time of National Socialism the children's home was closed, the rooms during the war as part of the Children's country dispatch occupied. After the war, the Salesians of Don Bosco took over the vacant children's home and still operate it today. The children's home in Sannerz is one of just under 20 closed children's homes in all of Germany. The outdoor area is freely accessible and the monastery ensemble, including the parish church, is a worth seeing motif.
  • 7  Schwarzenfels Castle. From this castle above Schwarzenfels, parts of the castle wall, the keep and the large stables are still preserved. Parts of the castle are now used as a youth hostel, otherwise there is a castle café that is open on weekends in the summer months. Guided tours of the castle can also be booked on request, more information on the website of the Heimatverein: http://ritter-schwarzenfels.de/.
  • 8  Huttenburg Altengronau, Burgstrasse 8. The Huttenburg in Altengronau was built in the 16th century in the style of a Renaissance castle as the residence of the von Hutten family. It is the successor of the presumed numerous medieval castles around Altengronau, about which no reliable archaeological knowledge is available so far. During the Thirty Years' War the castle was destroyed and then abandoned. A new building on the ruins of the castle initially served as an office building, later as a village school, until Haus Hutten bought the building back in 1983 and has been living in again since then.
  • 9  Altengronau moated castle, In the castle 1. Of this castle on the tributary of the Gronau into the Sinn, only the former fruit storage facility remains today, which serves as a residential building and is privately inhabited. Some remains of the collapsed main house are still visible on site. The rest of the castle grounds, including the former moats and gates, were built over with a marble factory that had to file for bankruptcy in 1985 and has been in ruins since then.

activities

A Travel by train between Schlüchtern and Jossa is an absolute must for every railway fan simply because of the numerous engineering structures on this section and is certainly the best way to take a look at the place.
