The name Skeleton Coast comes from the myriad of seal and whale bones that can be found along the coast. These animals are attracted by the abundance of fish that is based in the nutrient-rich water of the Benguela Stream, a cold ocean current coming from the South Atlantic. This treacherous current is not only a danger for the large marine mammals, it was also the undoing of many a ship, as several rusty wrecks prove. Currents and surf are also the reason why the only significant port around 1900 was only in the Bay of Walvis Bay could arise.
