Tourist Attractions

  • 1  Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Dom). The cathedral has a very beautiful, simple Romanesque travertine facade with a baroque portico, a rose window and a gold base mosaic. The magnificent, baroque, but still quite simple interior has a floor made of mosaic tiles. The most important work of art is the apse fresco by Filippo Lippi, which depicts the coronation of Mary in wonderfully strong colors. The fresco was Lippi's last great work and was completed by his students. He lies in the side chapel, buried in the far back of the right aisle. The cathedral is located in a unique square that opens up and slopes down towards it, the Piazza del Duomo.
  • 2  Rocca di Albornoz. The Rocca rises on the highest point of the hill of Spoleto and, like many castles in central Italy, was built as a papal fortress during the Renaissance. Below the castle walls there is a very popular walking path around the top of the hill, which is very popular with the locals and offers wonderful views of the city and the surrounding landscape.
  • 3 Ponte delle torri This bridge connects the castle hill (with the Rocca di Albornoz) with the Monteluco. It comes from the Middle Ages and not, as Goethe was convinced of, from antiquity.
  • 4  Monteluco. The Monteluco is directly opposite the castle hill, connected to it by the Ponte delle torri. It was already a holy mountain in ancient times, which is why it was never cut down and there is a great ancient holm oak forest. On the Monteluco there is a small hotel settlement of the same name, to which there is even a city bus from Spoleto and a hermitage of St. Francis is well worth seeing. The Monteluco is a good starting point (or a stage destination if you undertake the rewarding ascent from Spoleto over the Ponte delle torri) for hikes in the mountains of the Valnerina, such as the Castelmonte (approx. 3 hours from Spoleto, moderately difficult, unmarked , so a map or hiking guide is essential).
  • 5  Basilica of San Salvatore. The basilica is located on the northern edge of the city. It was built on the site of a Roman villa, using materials from the previous building. Significant remodeling took place in the Lombard era, and the quality of this work has made the basilica part of it since 2011 UNESCO world cultural heritage.
  • 6  Chiesa San Pietro fuori le Mura
  • 7  Chiesa San Domenico
  • 8  Piazza del Mercato. The Piazza del Mercato with a beautiful fountain and regular food market is the heart of the city.
  • Municipal art gallery

trips

Spoleto is a good base to explore the beautiful southeast corner of Umbria. From there you can easily reach a number of beautiful small towns and villages, such as Trevi, Montefalco, Bevagna, Norcia, Scheggino and Narni just to name the next.

Perhaps even more exciting are the beautiful mountain landscapes with their wonderful hiking opportunities. From the idyllic and gentle Valnerina, to the grandiose high mountain region of the Monti Sibillini with the national park of the same name and the monumental Piano grande around the cloud village Castelluccio.
