Steinheim am Albuch is a municipality in the eastern Swabian Alb and belongs to the tourist region Stauferland.

background

The place Steinheim lies on the southern edge of the Albuch in a crater that was formed around 15 million years ago by a meteorite impact, probably at the same time as the one around 40 km to the east Nordlinger Ries. With a diameter of around 3.5 km, the Steinheimer crater is much smaller than its neighbor measuring over 20 km, but the geology and palaeontology are at least as interesting here. The village of Steinheim itself is located in the northern part of the crater, on the central hill typical of a meteorite crater is the cloister courtyard with the home parlor. The district is located on the southern edge of the basin Sontheim in the Stubental, here is also the Meteor Crater Museum. The district is located a little to the west of it Söhnstetten.

Neighboring municipalities are Koenigsbronn, Heidenheim, Herbrechtingen, Gerstetten and Böhmenkirch.
