Giengen on the Brenz is a city in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Giengen was first mentioned in a document in 1078. The place received city rights in the 13th century, and in 1395 Giengen joined the Swabian League of Cities as a free imperial city. In 1803 the city became part of the Kingdom of Württemberg.

Since 1972, the city of Giengen has included the core city and the 4 other formerly independent districts of Burgberg, Hohenmemmingen, Hürben and Sachsenhausen.

The neighboring communities Hermaringen, Sontheim, Niederstotzingen, Gerstetten, Herbrechtingen and Heidenheim are in the district of Heidenheim, Syrgenstein and Bachhagel belong to the district Dillingen.
