Sharm el-Sheikh (eng. Sharm el-Sheikh, arab. شرم الشيخ) - a large resort on the southern tip of the peninsula Sinai in Egypt. The main reasons to visit include scuba diving and other water and beach activities, and exploring the Sinai Desert. Often abbreviated to "Sharm", Sharm i-Shaykh is pronounced in Arabic: "Sha" is the letter of the sun that engulfs the previous "el-". It is the most developed and cosmopolitan resort in Sinai.

Characteristic

Sharm el-Sheikh is located at the southern tip of a desert peninsula surrounded by rugged mountains, with no historic trade and pilgrimage routes, and no mineral wealth. Thus it remained a minor fishing village until the 20th century when it developed as a naval base controlling the shipping lanes eastward up the Gulf of Aqaba to Jordan and westward up the Gulf of Suez to the canal. But this made him the target of a military attack. World War II attacks were directed against naval convoys rather than the city. The Thistlegorm sank in 1941, one of the notable casualties nearby. In 1956 Sinai was occupied by Israel during the Suez Conflict, returning under Egyptian control in 1957. The area was re-occupied in 1967, this time for 15 years during which the Israelis developed Sharm as a tourist destination (and to some extent a second town on the Sinai coast). The peace agreement led to their gradual withdrawal in 1979-1982.

In the 1980s, Egypt became a destination for mass tourists, and Sharm continued to grow. President Hosni Mubarak (1981-2011, died in 2020) strongly supported this; he had made a dubious fortune out of it, but it meant that Sharm had initially missed the confusion of the "Arab Spring". However, in 2005, 88 people were killed by a series of bombs across the city, in 2006 there were bombings in Dahab, and from 2011, a long-running uprising in the Sinai began. In 2015, Airbus was shot down shortly after takeoff from Sharm, killing all 224 on board. This plus attacks elsewhere in Egypt have completely wiped out tourist visits as intended. Better security and a lull in attacks led to the resumption of tourist flights in late 2019, and the city was just beginning to recover as the coronavirus shut down trade again in 2020.

History

Sharm el-Sheikh was invaded many times in antiquity due to the rich deposits of copper and turquoise. It is also a point on the old trade route that used to transport silk and spices from India.

During a conflict with Israel in 1956 Egypt he lost this settlement, but a year later, in 1957, regained it. In 1967 there was a sea blockade Of the Straits of Tirana, which prevented the Israelis from swimming on The red sea. This sparked the Egyptian-Israeli war. Israel took the whole thing Sinai Peninsula along with this little fishing village. Under Israeli rule it grew into a city called Ofira. This name was in force until 1982. The civil airport of Ofira was opened there. This expense was aimed at making it impossible Egypt blocking the Straits of Tirana and controlling the road route between Eilat and the coast Gulf of Suez. Since then, tourism has started to develop in this city.

The western part of the city returned to Egypt in 1979, the rest were incorporated in 1982. Since that year, the hotel and tourist base has been developing. Several tourist settlements were built there. These flats are purchased by foreigners. In 2003 there was a finish line for the Dakar Rally. In 2007, a second modern airport terminal and a mosque were opened there. In recent years, the city has been a meeting place for world leaders in a specially built conference center. Today, the city is the most popular resort in Egypt among Poles.

Climate

The average temperature in winter ranges from 15 to 35 degrees Celsius, in the summer months from 20 to 45 degrees Celsius. The temperature of the Red Sea in this region ranges from 21 to 28 degrees Celsius in summer. However, due to the low air humidity, it is not so difficult to withstand these high temperatures. Rainfall is extremely rare here. The air is always dry and warm.

City districts

  • Sharm al-Maja - the oldest district of the city. There is a large bazaar, seaport and marina here. It is a district inhabited by resort workers.

Infrastructure

It has been assumed that the houses are built in the form of small luxury villas with greenery around and connected with the modern infrastructure of shops, restaurants and swimming pools. The popularity of this holiday town is constantly growing, therefore domestic and foreign companies are not afraid to invest large sums of money. The city grows more and more. New housing estates are being built, including Nabk Bay, Delta Sharm, Sunny Lake, Montaz e.t.c.

The city is divided into several districts and the two main districts are Sharm al-Maja and Naama Bay. The former is the original part of the city, the latter is the main entertainment center of the city. There are about 500 different hotels there and new holiday complexes are constantly being built. Many important personalities, incl. former president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, had his own residence here.

The economy is mainly based on tourism and water sports. The city has plenty of hotels, restaurants, golf courses and other recreational facilities. In the east it is located island of Tiran, separated by the Straits of Tirana.

In a district called Naama Bay is the base of the International Observation Force (Multinational Force and Observer), whose task is to observe and control divided into demilitarized belts Sinai Peninsula.

Drive

By plane

  • 1 Sharm El Sheikh International Airport (IATA: SSH). The largest airport in Sinai accepts planes of charter tourists every day during the winter season. The main airline for local flights is EgyptAir. There are 2 terminals that are next to each other. Terminal 1 is a new terminal serving Egypt Air and Easy Jet. You will only need a visa if you plan to leave the Sharm area (eg Ras Mohammed bus or boat, Cairo, St. Catherine). Can be purchased upon arrival (price seems to fluctuate overnight, make sure you have £ 15, $ 15 or € 15 on hand.

In the case of departures: the timetable shows only the next 1-2 hours, it is necessary to check the row of check-in desks with regard to the flight number.

Airport cafes

Cafes after the security check are: Sbarro (overcrowded), Cafe Europa (at the back of the lounge, less crowded): sandwiches, coffee, Egyptian sweets; the showroom of an international chain is coming soon Caffè Ritazza (also in Athens, Budapest, Madrid, Milan, London, Paris, New York, Stockholm, Zurich, Vienna).

Shops at the airport

After the security check: the pastry shop offers lukum, halva and other Egyptian sweets.

By ship

Ferry connections between Hurghada on the Red Sea coast and Sharm were suspended in 2018. Previously, high-speed catamarans were operated by La Pespes.

  • 2 Seaport of Sharm el-Sheikh it is located along the southern entrance road, about 1 km southeast of the old market square.

By car or by bus

You can get to Sharm el-Sheikh by driving along the eastern coast from Eilat (Israel) by Nuweiba and Dahab or across the west coast with Cairo. Buses run daily on both routes. From Cairo, East Delta buses take approximately 8 hours (LE80) and Superjet buses take 6 hours. When taking the bus from Cairo, keep your bus ticket and passport on hand as you will pass several checkpoints which require passengers to show their ID and ticket. The ride is interesting with beautiful scenery all along the route.

  • 3 Sharm el-Sheikh Bus Station it is about a kilometer from the Peace road. If you arrive in the evening the only option is a taxi as minibuses can be lumpy. As Sharm is a tourist based economy, you should be prepared for some fairs. If you like hiking, the main road is about 20 minutes from the main road. Just ask anyone to show you the direction of Peace. While on Peace Road, you should have no problem summoning the minibus.

When taking the minibus along Peace Road to the bus station, tell the driver that you are going to the bus station and want to be dropped off at a gas station. This may take some work given the drivers' limited English knowledge. At the gas station, you should see the minibuses that will take you to the final stage. Remember that transfers are not issued, you have to pay another fee for the last stage.

Information on charges for minibuses If the trip is within a kilometer or two, the cost should be around (LE3-5). If your stop is further away or if you are traveling late at night be prepared to ask for more money, in some cases drivers may request up to (LE10-20). Claims for higher fares can also occur if the driver thinks you have money! So get ready to negotiate. If the driver fee is unreasonable, get out - it often lowers costs. Upon arrival, ask the local how much the bus costs before hailing him. The information provided is a base price that you can bargain with.

Communication

Taxi

In Sharm, taxis are generally modern models, Hyundai or Chevrolet. Don't worry about the taxi meter: it probably isn't working anymore. Soon they burst due to dust and would have earned more than the "fixed" price anyway. Always write down the driver identification number. The tourist police are very helpful if you have a problem or quickly find out that you have left something inside but only with the taxi number.

Don't assume they have counters. Locals say they don't. Make sure you have transport waiting for you as Sharm El Sheikh Airport is the worst part of Egypt for a reasonably priced taxi. They will ask for LE150-400 for the 10-minute journey to Nabq. It is easy to get to the main road, hail a taxi and pay LE50-100. Otherwise, you will move away from the feeling of being violated. Check with your hotel to see if they have a pickup service.

Make sure you have small bills to pay for the fare and never pay until you reach your destination, making sure you only pay the pre-agreed price. Make sure the driver knows you are paying in Egyptian Pounds, not British Pounds. Taxis don't like to take coins.

By bus

There is also a fleet of blue and white tuk-tuk buses, which are basically little buses of varying condition that are used to transport residents around the Sharm el-Sheikh resort. It is the most economical mode of transport compared to taxis which are relatively expensive. They follow a fixed route from north to south, heading for the expat / local area of Hadaba. To summon a tuk-tuk wait next to the main street and raise your hand to mark one of them as it approaches. When you get on the bus, go inside, find a seat and just hand over the money to the driver (with the help of other passengers if you are sitting in the back). The tariff should never exceed LE3. If you start asking for a price, the driver may try very hard to get you to pay much more than you need to pay. Don't try to pay in foreign currency. When you arrive at your destination, call out "hinna quiis" (it's okay here). The main tourist center, Naama Bay, is known as the Marina (and there is no marina!).

Make sure you have a supply of small coins and bills to pay for the toll.

Worth seeing

Old Russian shipwreck in Na'ama Bay
Dolphins in Na'ama Bay
  • Old Town in Sharm Hail a taxi or local bus to take you to the Old Town of Sharm, ask the driver for the old market. It is a completely different experience for tourists staying in the Na'ama Bay area. Most of the Sharm was built after the Israeli invasion, so don't expect a Moroccan-style souk! Ignoring the touts outside of each store gives you a better experience, unless you are serious about buying. Stay firm in your resolve on what to pay for.
  • Na'ama Bay is the tourist center of Sharm el-Sheikh, an extraordinary sight and somewhat exotic for a Westerner are big fans pumping fresh air and water to street cafes and terraces near the hotels. Na'ama Bay is basically a lot of hotels and spas that share the same beach.
  • 1 Al-Mostafa Mosque, Al Rewaysat Rd The largest mosque in Sharm el-Sheikh. Has a small Islamic book shop, tours are offered from time to time
  • 2 Al Sahaba Mosque (At the old Market). After years of construction, this large mosque in the old market square has been completed. Built in an Ottoman architectural style, it can be easily mistaken for being there for hundreds of years
  • 3 El-Samaeyeen Cathedral Coptic Church beautifully decorated with frescoes of Bible verses. Most often there will be a guide who can offer you the tour
  • A visit to the desert is highly recommended. Various trips to the Bedouin, the beautiful Color Canyon, the White Canyon, quad and buggy safaris.

Tourism

Currently, the entire coastline is lined with hotels, restaurants and other entertainment venues. Sharm el-Sheikh is the richest city in the Sinai Peninsula. It is inhabited by sheikhs who care for the development of the region.

There are a multitude of different species of fish and coral reefs. There are plenty of bases and diving schools here. Until the mid-1980s, mainly diving amateurs came here, but currently it is only 20-30%, including large groups from Polish. Diving sites: shallow coral gardens, wrecks and steep walls for both beginners and experienced divers. Other attractions are: water sports, dolphinariums, golf courses, tennis courts, yacht harbors, water park, Thousand and One Nights entertainment center, go-kart tracks, bungee jumping and trampolines, discos, nightclubs, restaurants and casinos of international networks. The entire edge of this city is made up of coral gardens. You can admire the mangrove forest here. Near the city is located Ras Mohammed National Park covering a vast desert area, coral reefs and a shark observatory. Cruises on ships with glass bottoms and walls are also organized.

The main principles of the city are: "rest, swim and have fun!". There are also sightseeing tours, i.e. Mount Sinai, St. Catherine, Colorful canyon, Blue Hole, Sarabit al-Khadim, Hammam Faraun, and to Holy Land, the surrounding area the island of Tiran, Cairo, Luxor, Abu Simbel, the surrounding area Hurghada and Petry in Jordan.

It's worth doing

Diving

Strait of Tiran and the island of Tiran

Diving is the main occupation in Sharm el-Sheikh. When you dive into the warm waters of the Red Sea and leave the distant desert, you will enter a world full of life and colors. Divers, especially photographers, should be confident in their buoyancy to avoid damaging the delicate coral reef system. Some Na'ama Bay hotels have removed the coral reef from their stretch of beach to allow tourists to enjoy the water.

  • Reefs Tiran and Ras Mohammed are known to be two of the best diving sites in the world. They can be reached by boat from Sharm within two hours. Ras Mohammed is the southernmost point of the Sinai Peninsula. There, the current of the Gulf of Aqaba meets the Gulf of Suez. Due to the increase in the amount of plankton in the water, the amount of fish is amazing. Every day you can see huge shoals of barracudas, sharks and ants there.

The downside to its popularity is that up to 20 boats can be found on the same reef. If you go by boat every day, you can enjoy diving in the company of fifty other dive guides and around 10 divers in each group.

  • The SS Thistlegorm wreck is widely regarded as one of the best wreck diving sites in the world. However, it can also get very crowded with divers and this is definitely an advanced dive due to the strong currents, and part of the dive usually takes place in an overhead environment.
  • Smarter divers book diving safari. This way, you will avoid the crowds in popular spots and have the opportunity to snorkel in beautiful reefs far beyond the reach of the cruise boats. The total cost of a diving safari does not exceed a daily dive and saves a lot of stress. Check your chosen boat online and make sure the photos are up to date!

Operators include

Horse Riding

  • Stables at the Sofitel hotel. Helpful staff. Require helmets (included); several pairs of riding boots available. After the ride, offer to give the horse a shower. Bambi and Kelly are recognized as the fastest horses. Too far from the desert: on the 2-hour route, only 40 minutes is the actual desert drive, the remaining time is travel and return. For 2 hours, it is better to choose the stables at the edge of the desert. 45 € (2 hours)

Quads

There are dozens of operators who seem to use the same route, length and order of stops: while driving, you will meet many groups that follow the same route as yours. There are some really shaky parts of the route that look very much like a grater.

Wear a shirt with long sleeves; shoes are safer than sandals. Always wear a helmet and make sure your travel insurance covers this activity. Expect all your clothing (and skin) to be covered in gray dust.

2 hours of driving is enough for a non-professional rider; expect a few stops along the way. It's ideal to start your ride at 4:00 PM or later - to catch the sunset and come back when the air isn't that hot.

At the departure point, choose a bike when you start your horse riding: being one of the first allows you to ride faster and causes less dust.

  • Tiba Safari / Tiba Trip. Sold by many agencies. Groups are 10-15 bicycles; two people are allowed per bike (although the bikes were intended for one person). Tasting Berber tea is very risky for the stomach - this has been proven several times. The group is accompanied by a car with a camera - the video is not worth buying, and the car generates a lot of additional dust (not much can be done about it, unless the whole group asks in advance not to record at all). $ 20 for one person per bike for 2 hours; USD 25 for two people using the same bike for 2 hours.

Make sure you stick to the path and follow your guide as Egypt has a quarter of the world's landmines buried in deserts, some of them surprisingly close to Sharm el-Sheikh

Parasailing

Parasailing is very fun. But for a ride lasting less than 5 minutes, they charge the LE260 for 2 people and the LE220 for one person.

Camel trekking

The best place to do this is in the Sinai Desert on a camel tour. Then you can gaze at the desert stars at midnight after a homemade meal cooked by the people of Sinai.

Shopping

Water in stores costs around 3-5 LE. Bring your sunscreen as they cost 80-200 LE anywhere in the city, if you don't have a tan the shopkeeper will sell you one for a very bad price - welcome to Egypt.

Na'ama Bay has very strong sellers and a naive tourist who accepts a "free gift" (nothing in Egypt is for free) or falls in love with "come and sign my guestbook" should exercise caution in the store just to to be locked inside. When shopping, it's best not to talk to the retailers who engage you unless you are sure you are going to buy something. This allows for some degree of trouble-free walking (as they don't know what language you speak).

Hours of operation vary, but most shops open early to late afternoon and evenings. If you're looking for a break from hassle and haggling, there's a Carrefour Express supermarket with fixed prices. Coming from the bay, it is hidden behind one of the shopping malls, in the Golden Pyramid shopping center - on Peace Road. The choice is limited, but all staples are available without the hassle. To get there, you just need to get through the crowd of beaters.

  • Carrefour Express, Marina, one street west of "main disco street" (one street outside the main shopping / nuisance street in the Marina part). One of the classic European shops with price tags, credit card payment without defects, automatic exchange machine and ATM inside. They have a lot of local spices and even some souvenirs like a small papyrus just for LE2.

Gastronomy

If you need a break from eating at a resort, try one of the local places below. If you're looking for a taste of home, Il Mercato offers McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Costa and Starbucks. Manchow Wok has good Chinese food and is across the street from Stella, the only drinking place in El Mercato.

Na'ama Bay is fun, especially at night, where the lights of Bedouin and modern restaurants, cafes and other "bazaars" shine. Pork is not sold, even if advertised on the menu (it's actually salted beef). A service charge of 10-15% will be added to each bill.

Sparingly

  • El Masrien, Old market (next to the exit from the market), ☏ 20 (69) 366 2904. Noon - 4 am. It offers grilled Egyptian cuisine including Kabab, Kofta, Reyash, Nefa, Tarab and liver, all kinds of oriental dishes including veal shank, stuffed pigeon and duck, all kinds of pasta and rice, and different kinds of stuffed vegetables. Alcohol free. Enjoy all types of barbecue. Also worth a GAD a few doors away, look for the big red sign. Both are full of locals.

Moderate

  • Fares Seafood (at Horus Mall), ☏ 20 115 933 3735. All kinds of seafood straight from the Red Sea.
  • Fawanes Cafe, Naama Bay. Lebanese cuisine. A good place for hookahs; order smaller (Fawanes); apple is perfect.
  • Onions (at Iberotel IL Mercato). Fusion food, good services and reasonable prices.
  • Safsafa, Naama Bay, ☏ 20 69 3660474. Probably one of the best fish cafes in town. Rare place where grilled calamari is really good. However, the lobster included in the mixed seafood plate is dry.
  • Tempo Cafe. Contains the percentage of inhabitants. The waiters are dressed in characteristic orange and green uniforms. Hookah is good, but when serving for several people (with many hoses) the menu price can be multiplied by the number of people - ask in advance; maybe it's just a scam.
  • Indian restaurants. There are 3 Indian restaurants in Sharm. One of them is Maharaja on the beach path. The other two are India House restaurants, belonging to the hotels of the Thai chain. One is the old market and the other is in front of the little Buddha, on the road near the taxi stand. Maybe get an Indian menu.

Nightlife

When it comes to nightlife, Naama Bay offers several clubs: The Pacha, Little Buddha and Hard Rock Cafe. (Yes, the latter is one of the networks). There are countless bars and the pedestrian walkways offer plenty of cafes where you can also grab a shisha and people watch.

  • Black House. Drugie znane miejsce po klubie Pacha. Przypuszczalnie należący do Rosjan i przez wszystkich unikany.
  • Bus Stop, Nabq Bay.
  • Hard Rock Cafe, El Soultan Qabous St., Nabq. Codziennie w południe-4 rano.
  • Little Buddha, Naama Bay Hotel, ☏ 20 69 350 1030. Dobra muzyka i koktajle. Nie najtańsze miejsce w mieście.

  • Klub Pacha, hotel Sanafir, Naama Bay, ☏ 20 69 360-0197-8. Jeden z najbardziej znanych klubów tanecznych.
  • TGI Fridays, Naama Bay.
  • Space Sharm, ☏ 20 69 3603883. Oddział klubu nocnego Ibiza o tej samej nazwie.

Accommodation

Masz Soho Square i Mall Strip w obszarze Nabq hoteli all inclusive.

Dekoracja wnętrz i terytorium w stylu marokańskim; terytorium pokryte kwiatami. Zupa ogórkowa zimna i dziwna. Jest też restauracja indyjska.
