Geographical notes

The town of Talamone stands on a rocky promontory, which is located on the southern border of the Maremma Natural Park, in a dominant position on the whole stretch of coast that from Talamone reaches Monte Argentario, the so-called Gulf of Talamone. The surrounding area is characterized by the presence of the typical vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub and by long sandy beaches, bordered by pine forests.

Background

Thanks to finds dated between the 11th and 8th centuries BC. we know when the first settlements in the area of Talamone date back. In the fourth century Talamone is an Etruscan city. After the Etruscans, it is the period of Roman domination that exploited maritime traffic and built new roads that, from the south, led to Talamone. With the pax romana, the Talamone area becomes an important node with villas, spas, military camps and hydraulic works. We can also see the beginning of the reclamation of the marshy areas. When the Roman Empire falls, Talamone depopulates and the swamps cancel the reclamation that had been done. Barbarians and Saracens plunder the territory (the first by land, the second by sea) Around the year 1000 the Lombards arrive and the city begins to recover. In 1300, when Siena took possession of the city (for access to the sea), there was the complete recovery of the city of Talamone: church, houses, cisterns and furnaces were rebuilt; a wall was built with crenellated towers and the fortress with four corner towers with a keep at the top of the hill. of the Presidi under the Spanish government until 1707, when it passed into Austrian, then Bourbon hands and, finally, under the dominion of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1800.
