The city of Tengen in its current form came into being in 1975 after the formerly independent communities Tengen, Blumenfeld, Beuren am Ried, Büßlingen, Talheim, Uttenhofen, Watterdingen, Weil and Wiechs am Randen merged as part of a community reform. The city borders the municipalities Tightness, Hilzingen, Geisingen and Blumberg as well as the Swiss Canton Schaffhausen.
