Geographical notes

Teti is located in the historical region of Barbagia of Ollolai and borders on Austis, Ollolai, Olzai, Ovodda is Tiana.

Background

Pre-Nuragic period and Nuragic age

The territory of Teti was inhabited since the pre-Nuragic period, as evidenced by some findings in the plateau of Atzadalai (about 4700 BC). But the main traces present in the area date back to the Nuragic period, as evidenced by various sites, including Abini and the Nuragic village of S'Urbale.

From the Middle Ages to the domination of the Savoy

The current inhabited center has medieval origins, was part of the Giudicato of Arborea and was included in the curatoria of Austis. After the fall of the Giudicato of Arborea it was administered directly by Spanish royal officials, but its population maintained a certain autonomy. In 1461 Teti, together with the whole territory of Austis, was purchased by the Marquis of Oristano, and remained included in the marquisate until it was seized from Leonardo Alagon. In 1478 it was granted as a fiefdom to Pietro Pujades, who however died without leaving any children, in 1503. In 1504 Teti became part of the fiefdom purchased by Matteo Arbosich; however the inhabitants of Teti nurtured a strong feeling of autonomy, and in 1514, together with the inhabitants of Tiana, they came into conflict with the inhabitants of Ovodda for the control of the pastures in the lands located between the various villages. These clashes forced Arbosich to intervene to calm the controversy. After various feudal passages, Teti was inherited, after 1718, by Pietro Manca Guiso, whose descendants died out in 1788. Subsequently, the lordship over the barony of Austis, with the villages that were part of it, was inherited by marriage by the Amat di San Filippo, to which it was redeemed in 1836 with the abolition of the feudal system, for which it became a municipality administered by a mayor and a municipal council. In 1821 it was included in the province of Oristano, in 1848 it became part of the administrative division of Cagliari and in 1859 of the province of the same name. In 1927, when the province of Nuoro was reconstituted, Teti became part of it.

  • In the plateau in the Atzadalai locality, several menhirs in anthropomorphic aniconic type granite (the most primitive type of menhir with human features), stone axes, obsidian arrowheads, scrapers, scrapers (tools flint or obsidian used in the processing of leathers) and a large amount of processing chips, i.e. waste from the processing of flint. From the plateau of Atzadalai also comes a Neolithic idol with female features, made of well-worked reddish-brown volcanic rock and datable to the Middle Neolithic (4700 - 4000 BC). The small idol found in Atzadalai is one of the oldest examples of Sardinian works of art, it can be interpreted as a "fat Venus", or a "sleeping mother goddess". The eyes are marked with a slight asymmetrical incision, the nose is made with a small rectangular incision and the mouth marked with an incision on the lower part of the face. The arms, gathered under the breast, are highlighted by a deep angled incision with the vertex facing the belly, the left arm has incisions that probably schematize the presence of a baby in the womb.

Events and parties

  • Carnival. Simple icon time.svgIn February or March. The celebrations of the carnival of Teti have ancient origins, in fact they refer to ancient pre-Christian cults. The closing ceremony of the festivities, held on Ash Wednesday, culminates with a masked parade, during which a puppet representing the Carnival itself is symbolically killed.
  • Madonna of the Snow. Simple icon time.svg5th August.
  • San Sebastian. Simple icon time.svgIn September. The party took place, according to oral information, on the third Monday of September, and ended two Tuesdays later. The party underwent two important changes in the 1900s, in fact it was brought forward to the third Saturday, to make it end two Sundays later, perhaps, to embrace two weekends instead of one. Unlike the uncertain reasons for the first change, the second, which took place in 1989 and authorized by the Tetiesi, first through a popular referendum, proposed by the organizing committee, and confirmed following the request of the community by the Archdiocese of Oristano, consists in anticipating the party on the last Saturday of August, to give the possibility to emigrants, and to Tetiesi commuter students, to participate by taking advantage of the summer holidays. The festival takes place at the Sanctuary dedicated to the Saint, which is about 1 km from the town, lasts nine days, and is therefore considered one of the longest in Sardinia. For San Sebastiano over the last few decades established artists have performed both nationally and internationally of the caliber of: Little Tony (1984), Orchestra Casadei, Mal, Alberto Camerini, Rocky Roberts, Scialpi, Tosca, Papa Winnie, Luca Barbarossa, Edoardo Bennato (1994), Roberto Vecchioni (1995), Danilo Amerio (1996), Ricchi e Poveri (1997), Marina Rei (1998), I Nomadi, Tazenda and also for this reason, it is considered the most important in the area.
  • Autumn in Barbagia. Simple icon time.svgIn December.
