Torricella in Sabina is a center of the Lazio.

To know

Background

The town is located near the route of the ancient Via Salaria and next to the old route of the homonymous state road, now abandoned, replaced by a variant in the 70s and along a traditional sheep track of transhumance. In the territory of the Municipality there are interesting remains of the ancient Roman road: the "Sambuco bridge" preserved over the centuries, sections of Roman pavement in the locality of Carnevale, a milestone column and some ruins at Ornaro alto. The oldest monument is the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie dating back to the 10th century.

The center of Torricella in Sabina results in the eleventh century among the possessions of the powerful Abbey of Farfa. In the fourteenth century it came to the Cesarini family and, two centuries later, it passed to the Sforza Cesarini branch. The Sforza Cesarini remained owners of the tower and the palace, the main buildings of the ancient village, until the first half of the nineteenth century. Inside the tower, which presumably gives the town its name, is the church of the patron saint San Giovanni Battista. The medieval battlements are still visible.

In 1867 Torricella in Sabina hosted, welcomed by the population, numerous Garibaldi volunteers before the Battle of Mentana who, poorly equipped, were provided with fourteen hunting rifles by the patriotism of the inhabitants. Torricella in Sabina was crossed by the war in 1944, suffering heavy damage, in particular due to the destruction carried out by the retreating German army to block the roads to the Allied advance.

How to get around

What see

  • 1 Church of San Giovanni Battista. Interesting are the stone rose window and the remains of frescoes in the apse of the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, found following a restoration in the 1930s. The late Romanesque church is located inside the large medieval tower, which is still well preserved.
  • 2 Church and convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Just outside the town are the church and the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The original installation is the church, of which there is historical information as early as 956 AD. The Romanesque church has a rectangular base, with four side altars, and preserves medieval frescoes near the main altar. In 1944 the German military during the retreat, hid some tanks inside the church, breaking through part of the main facade and causing serious damage. The restoration began in the late 1950s following successive phases over the years. The complex is also made up of the old rooms of the convent and the guesthouse, still undergoing restoration.
  • Fortress of Ornaro Alto. We have certain news around the year 1000. If you go up to the top of the tower you can admire the fantastic hills that surround the village, forming a unique panorama. This building represents the heart of the history of this country. The square below the tower (called Piazza della Rocca) connects it to the rest of the historic center.
