Turin - a city in the northwest Italy, on the river Po, capital of the administrative region Piedmont. Turin is the fourth largest city in Italy.

Characteristic

Turin is an important industrial center, the most famous company coming from Turin is FIAT which has its headquarters here and a factory in the Mirafiori area. Turin has a good geographical position, the river Po flows through the city, hiding in the shadow of the nearby mountains.

In 2006, the Winter Olympic Games were held here.

The city is also known for its football teams: Juventus Turin and FC Torino.

History

The name comes from the word Taur, meaning mountain, but often the origin of the name is attributed to the legend of a bull that died during a fight with a dragon.

In the 1st century, the Romans established a military camp here.

In 1559 it becomes the capital of Piedmont after the peace that ended the Italian wars.

The Shroud of Turin has been kept in the cathedral since 1578.

Turin, as well as the whole of Piedmont, was under French rule in the years 1802-1814, at that time some investments were made, such as municipal baths. When Turin returned to Italian rule, all investments were successively destroyed. All except the bridge over the river Po, which turned out to be such an important road junction that it was decided to leave it. The name was changed to the Emmanuel I bridge (from the ruler who took over Italy as the first after 1814) and the explanation was given that this only French investment remains so that the proud Italian people can trample on what is French.

In the years 1861-1865 it was the first capital of Italy, from the second half of the twentieth century you can observe a sudden demographic increase caused by the development of technology and industry in the region.
