The Ural (Russian: Уральский федеральный округ, Uralsky federalny okrug) is one of seven other federal districts of Russia. The federal districts border on him Northwest Russia, Volga and Siberia.

The mountain ranges of the Ural lie between the Eastern European Plain and the West Siberian Lowlands. They run for more than 2,200 km in north-south direction and, together with the Ural River, form the border between Europe and Asia.

The summit heights of the Urals are below 2,000 m. However, the mountain range extends over several climate zones.

The Ural river rises in the southern Urals, flows through Magnitogorsk, Orsk and Orenburg to Kazakhstan and flows into the Caspian Sea at Ätyrau.
