background

Västerås [vɛstərˈoːs] is a city in the historic Swedish province of Västmanland. It is the capital of the province of Västmanland County and the capital of the municipality of Västerås and the seat of the bishopric of Västerås Monastery. The latter is based on the tradition of cucumber cultivation in the area around the city.

The sixth largest city in Sweden today has 107,000 to 132,000 inhabitants, depending on the counting method. Originally the city was called Westra Aros, whereas today's Gamla Uppsala was called Östra Aros. In 1990 the 1000th anniversary of the town was celebrated. In 1527 King Gustav Wasa abolished Catholicism in Sweden on the Reformation Reichstag.

The center of the city, which is considered bike-friendly, is car-free.
