Background

From the Stone Age, bundles with flint tips have been found. After this period, in the so-called protohistory, agricultural crops and livestock farming spread in Val Di Funes. The stable human settlement of Funes was accomplished first by the Reti, who were Latinized by the Romans, after their conquest, to constitute the Romansh language, and then by the Germans, and this colonization can be found in other Dolomite valleys. Funes originally belonged to the parish of Albes, together with Laion, Gudon, Val Gardena is Colfosco. In the main village of San Pietro in 1029 a church was erected, and the locality also had its own shepherd of souls. The village of Tiso was first mentioned in 1157 as Tisis. Around 1500 AD, the German language was consolidated, due to the many Bavarian immigrants, thus giving rise to the Funes dialect, in which however many words can also be derived from Romansh.
