Geographical notes

It includes the high mountain regions in the northern part of the Dolomites western and is located in South Tyrol. The protected area is bordered on the west by the Valle Isarco, north of the val Pusteria, east of the Val Badia and south of the Val Gardena.

Background

The natural park was founded in 1978, expanded in 1999 and is part of the area of Dolomites, which has been declared a World Heritage SiteUNESCO since 2009. The natural park is also part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas in Europe according to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive for the protection of habitats of wild animals and plant species. The purposes of the park are mainly nature conservation, landscape conservation and research, but also relaxation, information and environmental education.
