Geographical notes

Located in the Val Gardena, between Ortisei to the west and Selva di Val Gardena to the east, the municipal area has an altitude between 1,250 and 3,179 m a.s.l .; it is part of the district Salto-Sciliar. It is located inside the Puez-Odle Natural Park.

Background

The toponym is attested as S. Kristein in 1277, as St. Christina in 1323, as St. Christeins Mulgrei in 1452 and as St. Christina in Gröden / Santa Cristina in Gardena in 1817. Since 1923 (with the Royal Decree of 29 March 1923 ) in 1955, due to the Italianization carried out by fascism, the town was only called Santa Cristina; the current name was established by regional law 8 of 13 February 1955.

The coat of arms is truncated; in the upper part there is a deer on a silver background, in the lower part a red background. It is the coat of arms of the family of Primus von Dosses, who since 1636, near the church of Santa Cristina, organized a canteen for the poor and needy.

What see

Chapel in Bauhaus style
  • Church of Santa Cristina and Sant'Antonio Abate. It is the parish church of the municipality and one of the oldest religious buildings in the valley. It is believed that a consecrated chapel should have been built on the site of the church as early as the 12th century. The first written mention of the existence of the building is a letter of indulgence dating back to 1342, a period to which the bell tower also dates back, whose walls retain a Romanesque aspect (the cusped roof is instead later). Various extensions and renovations carried out over the centuries have gradually hidden the original appearance of the building, superimposing stylistically different architectural elements.
Inside the church there is a wooden choir from the Gothic period and a Baroque altar from 1690, the work of the Vinatzer family of artists.
The main entrance of the building faces west and can be reached via a stone bridge, originally built to cross the disused Val Gardena railway; other secondary entrances are located to the north and south. Behind the apse there is a small funerary chapel and the parish cemetery develops all around the building.
  • Chapel on Mount Pana. It was built in the thirties on a project by the Austrian architect Franz Baumann, who gave it a simple Bauhaus style adapted to the alpine environment.
  • Crack. House with first floor in stone, dating back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and projecting first floor in wood. The annexed barn was built in blockbau in 1805.
Gardena Castle
  • Fusell. Dwelling from the late Middle Ages, although enlarged several times. The wooden architrave of the entrance door bears the date 1542. Inside there is a kitchen for smoking meat with a barrel vault. The barn dates back to the mid-eighteenth century.
  • Paratoni. Two-storey house, one medieval in masonry and the upper one, projecting, in wood. The entrance door, with a frieze dated 1761, has a hump-backed jamb.
  • The mail. Three-storey construction and double pitched pitched roof. The stube features an elaborate Rococo decoration.
  • The Sigata. Baroque building with prominent string courses and wavy frames on the windows. A Rococo scroll painted on the outside shows the date 1786. Inside there are two baroque stube with intaglio decorations.
  • Villa Anri. It was built in the neo-baroque style in the 1920s, according to the design of Marius Ammon
  • Gardena-Fischburg Castle. A seventeenth-century castle built by the Wolkenstein counts for residential purposes, while showing some features of fortification, located close to the wooded slope. Privately owned, it cannot be visited.
