What see

Side view of the ruins of Castel Wolkenstein
Gardena Castle
  • Ruins of castel Wolkenstein. The castle was built around the thirteenth century, in the middle of a crevasse of dolomite rock, partially closed with some walls that provide some shelter, perhaps more from bad weather than from enemies. In short, a primitive castle, which in its long history has hosted important families.
In 1525 it suffered its first destruction, which however never led to its reconstruction. The first trace regarding the ownership of the castle by Arnoldo von Maulrapprisale dates back to 1237. The building then passed to the von Kastelruth and then in 1293 to the von Pradell lords of Villandro, whose last heir married (1360) a Wolkenstein, a family that still owns it. Since then the castle has acquired its present name.
At the beginning of Vallunga, under the ramparts of Stevia, some external walls remain, a courtyard with porphyry columns and some traces of paintings on the walls.
You can reach the castle along a path that starts from the underlying hotel, near the Carabinieri Training Center of Castelrotto.
  • Gardena Castle. Built in the first half of the 17th century with residential, fishing and hunting functions, it has a unitary layout with a turreted entrance, two internal courtyards and five other internal towers. The adjoining chapel dedicated to St. Odilia is rich in stuccos.
  • Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The original nucleus of the church is the sacristy, dating back to 1503 and enlarged a century later. In the years 1869-1871 the original chapel was enlarged with a presbytery and a neo-Gothic nave, a slender spire bell tower and a polygonal apse. In 1987 the nineteenth-century nave was replaced by the current one, with a polygonal plan.
  • Chapel of San Silvestro. Located along the Vallunga and originally late Baroque, it underwent significant changes around 1880. A simple round door leads into a barrel vaulted nave which closes in a polygonal apse. The walls are painted with scenes from the life of Jesus.
  • Gustin in La Poza. Maso from the late 16th century, consisting of a brick house and a wooden barn. A smoking kitchen and a stube with wooden coatings are preserved.
  • Piciulëi. Residential building of the late eighteenth century, with a painting of the Madonna del Soccorso on the outside and the original baroque stube inside. Other rooms of the interior retain the wooden cladding.
  • Plazola. Two-storey residential building: the masonry ground floor has two round portals and an external staircase, the projecting first floor is made of wood. Inside there is a chest dated 1684.
  • Col del Pelda. Residential building, preserves baroque and early twentieth century wooden coatings (ceiling with stucco and walls painted with allegories of the seasons)
Villa Dolomiti
  • Ruacia. Residential building of the nineteenth century, accessible via a masonry staircase and a door with a round stone frame. The stube has a negotic coating.
  • Villa Dolomiti. Hunting lodge from 1899, designed by Eduard Prinoth to a design by the Viennese architect Adolf Ritter von Inffeld, in the Secession style, rather unusual in Val Gardena. The entrance, secured by an external staircase, leads to a small tower which has two rooms on the ground floor with painted ceilings. The loggia on the first floor is also painted, while the stube has a coffered ceiling and an Art Nouveau stove.
  • Villa Fossi. Built in the thirties of the twentieth century by the architect Franz Sachs, it is a square-plan building in the neorealist style. The single pitched roof identifies a large panoramic terrace on the first floor, under which a recessed terrace opens on the ground floor.
