What see

View of Trostburg Castle
  • 1 Trostburg Castle (Castel Forte), via Burgfrieden, 22. It is located above the village of Ponte Gardena. The earliest records of Castel Trostburg date back to 1173 when it belonged to the domains of the Lords of Castelrotto. Later it passed to the Lords of Velturno, ministerial of the bishop princes of Bressanone and then it went as a fief to the Lords of Villandro. From 1385 to 1967 it was owned by the Counts Wolkenstein, who administered the justice of the Ponte Gardena area and during some historical phases also of that of Villandro. The famous adventurer and minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein lived there.
From the seventeenth the decline of the manor began: no longer the main seat of the Counts Wolkenstein, it was inhabited only in the summer months. Despite this, maintenance continued, but the damage due to bad weather and wars, including some even during the Second World War, accumulated. In 1967 the degradation was such that some private citizens gathered in a company to buy the castle and preserve it. In 1981 this company transformed into today's Südtiroler Burgeninstitut of which Castel Trostburg is the main seat.
Since then, various restoration works have been carried out, which not only made it possible to safeguard the buildings, but also brought to light the previously covered frescoes.
The castle is made up of three distinct but connected parts: the main core which develops around an internal courtyard overlooked by the keep and the 13th century palace, as well as other 15th century residential buildings; between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a new south wing was added and a new wider wall enclosing another courtyard; a bulwark of defense advanced which blocks the access road to the south and is composed of a door (Michaelstor), a tower, a barracks, a chapel and other buildings; a watchtower (Kreiderturm) located on the slope in a dominant position with respect to the rest of the castle.
The castle is open to the public from Easter to the end of October and its rooms also host the South Tyrolean Castles Museum, with models of 86 castles in the area. It is also possible to visit:
- The Hall of the Knights
- The chapel
- The Gothic Stube, with a trefoil wooden vault
- The largest wine press in theSouth Tyrol
- The Wolkenstein family tree
The castle can only be reached on foot from the village of Ponte Gardena in two ways:
- Going up the steep medieval path of the knights, which starts from the village church and takes about twenty minutes
- Following the normal road that starts from the cemetery, more comfortable but with less charm.
From the castle it is possible to continue on other paths, reaching Tagusa (Tagusens) and the plateau of Castelrotto.
