Background
The name of Castelruptum it appears for the first time in a document of 982–987 in which the bishop Albuino di Bressanone he exchanged the income of the local church with the bishop Eticho of Augusta. Before this date, a settlement was already present on site, but the name of which has not reached us. The traces of Castelvecchio can be traced back to the Middle Ages, today only a massive square tower remains as well as some traces of walls, brick huts and therefore the presence of a fortified village.
In the 13th century, the area passed to Count Mainardo II of Tirolo-Gorizia and then to the lords of Castelrotto. In 1348 the castle was owned by Duke Konrad Teck who was also captain of the Adige department. At the beginning of the 15th century, the castle and the town became the property of the Hauenstein family and it was at this time that the first large-scale stable farms were established in the area. Shortly afterwards the property passed to Michael Kraus, a Hungarian nobleman arrived here by marriage and already in fief of some lands near Lake Balaton. He became famous in particular for the wealth accumulated by his fiefdoms and for the charitable works that he extended to the poor of Castelrotto before his death, establishing that this custom was continued over the centuries in the month of October with the distribution of a loaf of bread and of a bag of salt to every poor person in the community. He was subsequently buried in the chapel of the tower where his tomb still stands today. His nephew, Jakob Kraus, was ennobled by the Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg on 2 June 1607 and it was he who largely proceeded to the demolition of the ancient castle, creating a chapel for the village dedicated to St. Anthony, in addition to the construction by his son Georg Kraus of a natural park (1675) complete with seven small chapels and three large crucifixes (Christ and the two thieves) which resume some stages of the Via Crucis. In 1847 the family died out.
Furthermore, until 1924, Castelrotto had its own district court, which was later transferred to ClosedThe fruitful source of income for the inhabitants of this country was the breeding of livestock, supported by a strong presence of vast surrounding alpine pastures, exceeding the sale of cattle that was held four times in the year 1600. - The building was erected in the 12th century by the lords of Hauenstein and underwent successive extensions in the 15th and 16th centuries. One third of it was owned by the fourteenth-century Tyrolean poet Oswald von Wolkenstein, who established his residence there for a few years and composed some of his Lieder there.
- Baron Christoph von Wolkenstein bought the castle from his cousins' branch on 1 January 1551 but over time his heirs lost interest in it and it fell into ruin as early as the 17th century.
- On the occasion of the sixth centenary of von Wolkenstein's death, in the years 1977-1978 the remains were restored and some frescoes were recovered inside the chapel.

Events and parties
- Traditional peasant wedding (Bauernhochzeit). In Castelrotto a traditional "peasant wedding" (Bauernhochzeit) is held every winter, an event that revives ancient customs. From the early years of the twentieth century to the 1950s, weddings took place in winter, or when the peasants were not engaged in their agricultural work. Today this traditional event has become part of the tourist circuit; all the local population wears the clothes of the time, in particular the bride will wear a hat that recalls the colors of the grass and the groom will bring a carnation larger than those worn by the other men invited to the celebrations for the union. Women, on the other hand, are divided into those who wear a thick woolen headdress, the Turmkappe and the unmarried ones who wear a shiny hat adorned with golden leaves. In addition there is the clerk of the ceremony, who wears a large hat adorned with black and white ostrich feathers.
- Usually the event provides for several couples to participate in a wedding procession, consisting of horse-drawn sleighs, which also includes relatives and friends of the couples, all "decorated" for the event with the Trachter. The procession that starts from the church of San Valentino is followed by the religious ceremony, and then a traditional banquet with typical Tyrolean dances.
- Wedding banquets in Castelrotto. Together with the peasant wedding celebrations, the "Wedding Banquets of Castelrotto" are held almost in the same period. On this occasion, the main restaurants delight tourists with typical dishes that were once served during a peasant wedding.
