Background
The area is rich in archaeological finds from the prehistoric ages, mainly carried out in the Plunacker area. The presence of man is documented from the Mesolithic age to continue in the Neolithic. Less witnessed are the Bronze Age and the Copper Age,
In South Tyrol, the Roman era began with the reign of Emperor Augustus (31st - 14th century AD) and continued until the 5th and 6th centuries AD. At that time the area around Villandro was entirely populated, albeit selectively. The only extant artifacts were found at the Plunacker archaeological site, where the remains of a large, sumptuously furnished Roman villa were discovered.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, in the Middle Ages one of the most powerful aristocratic families of the Tyrol who resided in Villandro was called "Lords of Villandro". These were powerful farmers living in large mansion-like farms in Villandro, who had worked to expand their holdings and gain political influence. The Lords of Villandro were mentioned for the first time in ecclesiastical documents of the first half of the 12th century; at the beginning they were installed as ministerial of the bishops of Bressanone and of Trento and within the Villandro court, helping to establish a separate court district in the county of Bolzano.
Over time their possessions expanded from Sterzing to Bolzano, in val Pusteria, in Val di Funes and in Val Gardena. They also owned castles and courts in Tramin, Livinallongo, Feltre is Belluno. In the conflicts between the Habsburgs, the Duchy of Bavaria of the Wittelsbach dynasty and the Luxembourgers of Tyrol, their position was somewhat inglorious and marked the decline of the Lords of Villandro. In the autumn of 1347 the Emperor Ludwig (the "Bavarian") won the decisive battle against his enemies, defeated the Bishop of Trento and took revenge on the former governor Engelmar of Villandro. He was found guilty of treason by the Austrian justice and sentenced to death. He was beheaded in front of his brother's castle. Later the Lords of Villandro lost most of their possessions. Only Ekkehard of Villandro-Trostburg managed to gain some political influence, without however preventing the definitive decline of the powerful family of the Lords of Villandro in 1547.

How to get around
What see
Villandro is one of the most popular destinations to spend a holiday in Valle Isarco. The territory allows you to make countless excursions on foot both at the bottom of the valley and on the mountain pastures. Villandro is also known for its mines (open to the public), which in the Middle Ages were among the most important of Tyrol. Especially in the 16th century when they shaped the life of Villandro and of ClosedIn the center of the town there are two churches almost completely attached, with their respective bell towers. The main one is the parish church of Santo Stefano.
- Parish Church of Santo Stefano. The cemetery of the parish church of Santo Stefano, around the church, with the particular wrought iron sepulchral crosses that run away from the mound, is well known and is part of the most beautiful cemeteries in theSouth Tyrol.

- Three Churches (Dreikirchen). There are three adjacent churches located at 1,120 meters above sea level between the villages of Barbiano and Villandro, in Val d'Isarco; they were built over an old pagan place of worship, probably dedicated to the divinities of the springs. The three small churches are from the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and are very interesting for their artistic value, which distinguishes them throughout the historical region of Tyrol. In ancient times this place of worship was guarded by hermits. The churches were and still are dedicated respectively to Santa Geltrude (documented since 1237), to San Nicola (St. Nikolaus) and to Santa Magdalena (first mentioned in 1422).
- In the past, the poet Christian Morgenstern and the psychotherapist Sigmund Freud also stayed there.
- The place can be reached by various paths, but the simplest is the one that starts just outside Barbiano; after turning left, after 500 meters you follow the signs for "Bagni tre churches" (Bad Dreikirchen). From the "Mathilde" building which can be reached by car, take path number 8. After a walk of about 30 minutes you will arrive at the Three Churches.
- Alternatively, you can always reach the Three Churches from Villandro, along path 11, in about an hour.
- The churches are usually closed, but the keys are available to pilgrims, guarded by the owners of the Messnerhof, the hotel located on site.
Church of Santa Geltrude
- The church dedicated to Santa Geltrude is built with a late Romanesque architecture with early Gothic features (see for this the round arch and the baptismal font). On the altar there is a wooden statue of the saint, probably from the first half of the 14th century. The altar is made up of a baroque box with gothic female figures. Behind the altar there is a depiction of the "Crucifixion" of Christ, dating back to the fifteenth century. To the left of the altar there is an altarpiece with a central statue of the Madonna with child, at its sides the two Saints, Santa Geltrude and Santa Maddalena, in turn flanked by San Paolo and San Pietro. Worthy of a brief stop is the fresco placed on the external façade.
Church of San Nicola
- This second church has an architectural structure very similar to the previous one. One of its peculiarities is the door altar, attributed to the late Gothic sculptor Hans Klocker from Brescia, partially restored in 1984.
Church of Santa Magdalena
- This latter church is slightly larger than the previous two; it was almost certainly built in the 1500s after a landslide probably destroyed the previous one. It has no frescoes, but retains some wooden sculptures. The windows of the building also have an "acute sixth", an octagonal-shaped choir closure and an ogival door studded with local-style pendentives.
Events and parties
- Törggelen. Traditional autumn tasting of new wine and typical peasant dishes.
