Background

Sterzing - Tower of the Twelve

Few things remain of Roman origin, such as a milestone of Septimius Severus, in which, however, the name of the city does not appear. The assonant Uuipitin instead it is attested in a document dated 827. On a medieval map, a copy of an ancient Roman road map, it appears Vipitenum. The first Roman settlement could date back to 14 BC, when on a communication route between Italy and the countries beyond the Alps, Drusus major founded a military station with the name of Vipitenum. The sepulchral monument to Postumia Vittorina and a memorial stone with Mithraic bas-relief date back to Roman times. In 550, following an invasion by the Baiuvari, the village of Vipiteno developed, but only in 1180 is there the first mention of Stercengum. A century later (1280) Prince Mainardo II of Tirolo-Gorizia elevates the village to the status of a city. Having always been a place of transit, the Fuggers of Augusta made it a center for the sorting of products from the silver mines of the nearby Val Ridanna and Val di Fleres.

Vipiteno was already positioned in the middle of the major communication routes in ancient times. In 1252 the then Pope Innocent IV defined Vipiteno villa and later, in 1295, it also began to pay taxes as a city and was therefore registered in the ledger of the prince of the time as civitas.

Vipiteno experienced its maximum splendor in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries especially after the fire, which in 1443, damaged part of the city. Crenellated buildings, some late Gothic, were rebuilt in the New Town (the street name) such as: House of the Citizen Judgment (1450), the Hotel "Aquila d'Oro" (1446), the Fugger branch (1553), Casa Rafenstein (originally Köchl, 1472), the Town Hall (1473), the Geizkofler House (1600) and the House of the Mineral Judgment (originally by the entrepreneurs Messing and PfarrKircher, 1500) which still adorn the main street.

The legend

There is a legend that tells of Störz a crippled pilgrim as the first inhabitant of the modern city, who even now remains in the city coat of arms under the wings of the Tyrolean eagle. In reality, this figure in the coat of arms could also make us think of the three hospices that the town had in the past.

How to orient yourself

Typical architecture of the houses of Vipiteno

There Civic tower, also called of the Twelve, divides the city into two parts: the Old City and the New Town. The ancient urban settlement develops along the main axis of the Brenner road, which was a very important route for communications between the Latin and Germanic world, in the past as well as today.

The growth of new districts has not affected the historic core, which has remained almost intact in its 12th century conformation, when Vipiteno rose to the rank of city. Only a few tracts remain of the walls. Characteristic are the houses equipped with details bay windows or Erker, covered and closed projecting balconies. The main street (Reichstrasse) no longer hosts inns and artisan shops but shops and hotels.

Neighborhoods

Its municipal area also includes the villages of Ceves (Tschöfs), Novale (Ried) and Tunes (Thuins).
