Background

It was the Reti who placed a permanent human settlement in Funes; followed by the Romans and after the fall of Rome the Germans. In Christian times Funes originally belonged to the parish of Albes, together with Laion, Gudon, Val Gardena and Colfosco. In the main village of San Pietro in 1029 a church was erected, and the locality also had its own shepherd of souls. The hamlet of Tiso was mentioned for the first time in 1157 as Tisis, and there were also several spellings of its topographical denomination: Tys, Tays, Theiss and Thaiss.

Around 1500 A.D. because of the many Bavarian or Baiuvarian immigrants, as they were called at the time, the German language was consolidated and thus gave rise to the dialect of Funes, in which however many words can also be derived from Romansh.

The municipality of Funes was established in 1810, jointly with the municipalities of Gudon and Tiso, under Bavarian rule, and theAustria then confirmed this municipal autonomy in 1817. Gudon and Tiso were unified in 1854, only to be separated again fifteen years later, and Tiso remained an autonomous municipality until 1929, which was however reunited as a hamlet in Funes. owned by the counts von Enzenberg, it is a rare example of an eighteenth-century agricultural and hunting estate, richly adorned with frescoes. In 1988 it was restored by the Messerschmitt Foundation.

During the course of the First World War the Val di Funes she was not particularly touched. However, on the ridge of the mountain, from Rio Funes to Mount Cappello (Haube), some fortified structures were erected, in particular in the hamlet of Tiso some trenches and bunkers were erected to control the underlying Val d'Isarco from which any invaders could ascend. During the Second World War the same structures were reused no longer for military purposes, but as shelter for the population during the bombing by the allies.
