background
history
In 1803 Vallemaggia became the main town Cevio, to a district of the new canton of Ticino, which arose from Napoleon's mediation from the Helvetic cantons of Bellinzona and Lugano, which had existed since 1798.
railroad
Between 1907 and 1965 there was a single track Narrow-gauge railway linethat popularly Valmaggina was called and by the «Locarno - Ponte Brolla - Bignasco»(LPB). In the district of Maggia Valley there have been no train connections since November 1965, against the displeasure and resistance of the population in the valley. The tracks were then dismantled along the single-track route. Thus only a few former station buildings as well as bridges, galleries and routing structures are evidence of the former railway line between the railway station in Ponte Brolla and Bignasco. An exception is the section of track that is still actively used at the junction just behind the Ponte Brolla train station and the bridge to the municipality Terre di Pedemonte in the Locarno district, which protrudes into the area of the Maggia Valley and is now used as a depot.
Natural geographical conditions
The landscape of the district consists mainly of the Maggia Valley and the Maggia flowing in it, 56 km in length, which once rose directly from the various spring waters of the Cristallina Mountains in the old natural Narèt Lake, the Scuro Lake and the Laghetti and was 58.10 km in length. In contrast, the waters today gather in the structures of the Narèt reservoir with an 80 m high arched wall at an altitude of 2310 m, and in the Sambu Valley reservoir with a 124 m high arched wall at an altitude of 1461 m. From where the Maggia now flows along the Lavizzara and Maggia valleys, from where you finally cross a waterfall and narrow rock gorges near Tegna in the OT Ponte Brolla to the neighboring district Locarno falls. The most important tributaries in the inhabited valleys, orographically to the right of the Maggia, are the torrents Peccia from the Pecciatal, Bavona from the Bavona valley into which the 80 m high waterfall at Foroglio der kl. The river from the Calnegiatal pours, as well as the Rovana from the Rovanatal to Linescio, which was called Rovana di Campo, into which the torrent of the Rovana di Bosco Gurin from the Gurintal flows above Collinasca. The only noteworthy orographic side valley to the left of the Maggia is that of Prato whose torrent flows into the Maggia near Prato.
The entire district is located in the mountains of the Lepontine Alps. The highest point of the district is the Basodino mountain with 3273 m height, with the glacier of the same name. Others are the Campo Tencia summit with 3072 m height, the Cristallina summit 2912 m height and south of this the Poncione di Braga with 2864 m height.
All of the rivers in the district flow into the long river Maggiathat with a delta in the Lake Maggiore flows out.
language
Colloquial language is predominantly that Italian language with one typical of north-east Italy Galloital Pronunciation and the Ticino dialect common in Sopraceneri. This is a regional expression of the West Lombard dialect Laghée. German is the first foreign language here, as in the neighboring district of Locarno, but is not widespread (exception: Gurin).
