Venice (Venezia in Italian) [1] it is still one of the most interesting and charming places in the world. This sanctuary, located on a lagoon, has remained practically the same for the last five hundred years, making it even more fascinating. Despite the fact that Venice no longer shines as it used to and that there are more tourists than residents, the city maintains its romantic charm.

Understand

Summer is the worst time to visit Venice: it is very hot, the canals give off bad smells, it is full of mosquitoes and there are even more tourists than usual. Spring and autumn are probably the best times, although it does involve a compromise between weather (expect 5-15 ° C in March) and number of tourists. In any case, a visit to Venice is always worth it, even in summer.

The "acqua Alta" has become routine in Venice. Sometimes the water level in the lagoon rises above the level of the squares and streets, flooding them. It usually happens several times a year, usually during the colder months, and usually lasts a couple of hours. The tourist can find walkways in adjoining alleys, ready to be placed when the acqua alta. When the city begins to flood, sirens sound to alert residents and businesses. If your Italian is fluent, you will be able to watch news on television where you can get information about the beginning and end of the flood.

In case of urgency and assistance, the Italian Ministry of Tourism created a multilingual contact center in the country that provides information and advice to travelers in 8 languages. Easy Italia is an active service 7 days out of 7, including holidays, from 9am to 10pm. You can contact Easy Italia by phone by calling the number 039.039.039 (to call from abroad you need to dial 039.039.039.039), or the free number 800.000.039 (available throughout the Italian territory from landlines). You can also contact the service through Skype at the address “easyitalia” and by sending an email from the official website: http://www.easy-italia.com/

To get

Since Venice is located on a lagoon, water is a crucial element in transportation. The most used means of getting to Venice are the train or the boat.

By plane

The nearest airport is at Mestre, on the mainland, an industrial city, called Marco Polo. There is another in TrevisoIt is very small and is located 40 km from Venice. Both airports are connected by bus to Venice (Piazzale Roma) - From Treviso BARZI BUS SERVICE. Tickets can be purchased at the "Venice Shuttle Bus" office at the airport or directly inside the BARZI Bus: at the TREVISO airport exit. The traveler can purchase a pleasant one-hour boat trip to San Marco, via Murano, Lido and the Arsenale. Alternatively, you can hire a fast water taxi for around € 80. To get to Venice from the airport by boat is to enter through the main gate of the city.

By train

From the mainland, there are trains that cross Mestre to the Santa Lucia station, on the west side of Venice, very close to the piazzale roma and next to the grand canal. (The traveler should make sure not to be confused with Venezia Mestre). From here, vaporetti or water buses, as well as water taxis, take the traveler to any point on the islands.

By car

It is not a good option. Cars can reach Venice, but must be left in the parking lot at the entrance of the city (Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, the largest parking lot in Europe). Parking is expensive, it usually costs around 20 euros a day and traffic jams can become significant in high season. An alternative is to use the car parks on the mainland and take a vaporetto or bus to Venice. A good idea is to park near the train station in Mestre and take a train to Santa Lucía station. The station offers a good frequency of passage, is close to the city (about 8-10 minutes) and is a good starting point to visit Venice. Some of these companies will help you to move around Venice; Beneluxcar, Rental car

Most car rental companies have points of sale in Piazzale Roma, on the edge of the city, on the ground floor of one of the main car parks. When the traveler wants to leave his car, he will need to park it on the street and walk to the company premises to hand over the keys. Do not park in the station car park! There is a vaporetto stop across the road from the parking lot.

By bus

The Piazzale Roma bus station is well stocked with vaporetti and water taxis.

Boat

The ships arrive at the Stazione Marittima, located to the west of the main islands, is provided with vaporetti and water taxis.

Travel

Venice is an extraordinary city to walk around, and the absence of cars makes it a very pleasant experience. The Rialtine Islands (the main part of Venice) are small enough to be covered from end to end in about an hour.

If the traveler wants to move faster, there are numerous vaporetti available as well as water taxis. Vaporetti are generally the best way to get around Venice, even if the route changes. If the traveler plans to visit Venice for several days, it is much cheaper to use the vaporetto than the water taxi. If you want to have a romantic canal ride, you can ride a gondola. The vaporetti, especially those used massively by the workers of Venice, can sometimes make the journey more slowly than if we were walking.

ACTV[2] She is in charge of the vaporetti and other public transport both in the lagoon and on the mainland. Tickets of 1, 3 and 7 days are available, with two variants (Blue and Orange). Basic Blue tickets provide unlimited travel on ACTV services (vaporetti, motoscafi and buses) and free use of AMAV toilets. The Orange ticket also provides free entry to some of the museums (those covered by the Museum card). None of these tickets include the water bus that goes to Marco Polo airport unless a surcharge is paid. Travel cards are much cheaper than single trip tickets.

In any case, the walk is recommended. The city is not big and you can walk from one end to the other in a few hours, discovering the art and architecture of every corner of Venice along the way.

The tourist cannot miss the Rialto Bridge, the Piazza San Marco, and some of the Campaniles: San Marco and San Giorgio.

The schedules of the monuments are very strict and the tourist must comply with them.

Watch

  • The Basilica of San Marco (Basilica di San Marco) is located in Piazza San Marco and is one of the highlights of a visit to Venice. As in most Italian churches, the visitor must dress appropriately to enter: short skirts and bare shoulders are not allowed.
Terrace of a cafe in Piazza San Marco.
  • If you can, visit the Piazza San Marco at night. Napoleon said of that square that it was "the biggest ballroom" he had ever seen ... and it is worth noting it. Have a coffee (it is the cheapest) in one of the terraces of the Plaza but do not get lost: apart from what the coffee costs you, each establishment charges an extra for the music (they have a small stage with musicians who play live ). In that square is the Florian coffee, which is the oldest cafe in Europe. The interior decoration is original. Two expressos on the Florian's terrace cost 23 euros (but it's worth it).
  • The Peggy Guggenheim Museum[3], located in the Dorsoduoro region, east of the Accademia Bridge, on the south bank of the Grand Canal, offers a private collection of modern art, collected by Peggy Guggenheim. 10: 00-18: 00 Wednesday-Monday. The gallery includes works by Kandinsky, Tanguy, Duchamp, Pollock, and Mondrian. 10 €
Rialto bridge.
  • The Ponte Rialto Built in 1591 it is the most famous bridge in Venice, located across the Grand Canal. It is made up of a single arch with two ramps that meet in the central portico. On each side of the ramp there are premises topped in semicircular arches in which there are currently shops for tourists.
  • The Ducale Palace You can not stop seeing it, all art, you can cross the Bridge of Sighs in the direction of the prison. (It takes almost a morning to see it).
  • The Bell Tower of San Marcos , located in the same square of San Marcos is the highest tower in Venice. With 100 m. high, it has an elevator that lifts up to the belfry-viewpoint at 60 m. from a bird's eye view of the entire city, "you're going to freak out" (6 euros)
  • The campi . There are many little squares in Venice (campi), usually with a well in the center, with a special charm. There are them all over the city, and the further away from the center, the more charming. One of the most extensive is the Santa Margherita field, with a lot of atmosphere at night. Other interesting ones are Santa Maria Formosa or H.H. Giovanni e Paolo. But the best thing is to discover the most remote, little ones ... One more Venice delight.

Do

  • Travel in vaporetto along the Grand Canal just before sunset. The vaporetti are not cheap, but the landscapes are extraordinary. The best lines for this are 1 and 82.
Gondola ride through the Venetian canals.
  • Take one gondola if you can afford it. It is expensive, but some gondoliere they may be willing to haggle (both money and time). The price can reach € 90 for a 30-minute tour. You can haggle with several and stick with the one that offers you the best deal.
  • A cheap alternative to the gondola is to cross the Grand Canal (from shore to shore) by traghetto. In 2006 it cost 0.50 euros. There are seven pick-up spots, but they often only work during hours when people come and go from work.
  • To the northeast, in addition to the islands of Murano and Burano, a little further (about half an hour by boat from Venice) is the island of Torcello. The vaporetto leaves from Fundamenta Nuove from ten in the morning until approximately five in the afternoon. The town, founded in the 5th century, was important before Venice, but now only a few families live in Torcello. Thus we find ourselves almost in the middle of nowhere the impressive Byzantine cathedral of Santa Maria Assumpta, with incredible mosaics. Very interesting are Santa Fosca and the throne of Atila. The ship's route passes through San michele (cemetery island), Murano, San Francesco del deserto Y Burano.
  • The Lido, an island located in front of the Plaza de San Marcos. This is where the Venezia Film Festival is held [4] . You cannot avoid visiting (if you ask for permission at reception, they will most likely allow you to do so freely) to the Hotel Des Bains, where the magnificent film "Death in Venice" was filmed. Also as a cinematic "morbid", you can take a tour of the Hotel Excelsior, where press conferences and interviews with celebrities who attend the festival are usually held and where we can see how one of its large rooms was used as a set for the film "Once upon a time in America" in its dance sequences with the background theme "Poppy".

To buy

  • Venetia Studium, San Marco 2425 Calle XXII Marzo, 39041/5236953, [email protected], [5]. Plissèe silk dresses, scarves, shawls, kerchiefs Made in Venice. Silk plissèe of all imaginable colors.
  • Fortuny Lamps - The company has been manufacturing hand-painted silk Fortuny ® lamps since 1984.[6]
  • If you are looking for something to do, you can always go shopping. Venice is full of little shops. The most common local specialties are Carnival masks, glass, and patterned paper. Prices can vary a lot, so it's a good idea to wait to buy until you have a rough idea of the relative price of things. In Murano you can find demonstrations of how glass is made.

In Venice there are innumerable hotel rooms, due to its many tourists. A great recommendation is the Hotel Baure. A luxury hotel located on the Grand Canal where one can unleash their imagination.

  • Don't leave Venice without buying one of its famous masks. There are many prices, from 10 or 20 euros to 400 or 500. There is a store near the Rialto Bridge that is one of the most famous in the city because it was the one that made the masks that appear in the movie EYES WIDE SHUT. It is easily located since it is advertised in the shop window. It is a small shop but it has beautiful masks. Ah! And those in the movie cost between 40 and 70 euros.
  • Murano glass: you can buy it all over Venice, but the ideal is to go to the island of Murano and see the manufacturing process directly, which you can also see in Venice. In fact, Murano glass is originally from Venice. What happens is that after a few years the vast majority of the factories of this precious crystal moved to the island of Murano, hence its name.

Curiosities

Venice is a very interesting city not only because of its location -and casuistry- but because of the functional binomial that it forms with Mestre, emulating a kind of ferry that fills the city first thing in the morning and leaves it dead from 9:00 p.m. where it already begins to show structural problems to face this massive and welfare tourism for its inhabitants, such as its precarious garbage collection system: almost like the "water goes" of the Middle Ages.

Overcrowded even in low season, a large part of the buildings - of great heritage value - are abandoned. Even the "Venetians" themselves have stopped living in the city and come to work from Mestre, being part of that functional system. Also, its traditional inhabitants abandon the idea of restoring life to the city and that part of the buildings of greater heritage value - and today without a future - recover again some public functions that give greater functionality.

The only solution they see for the future of that heritage when you ask them is that they "become hotels", in this way "they were saved", they told me. In fact, they told me that since 2000 the hotel overcrowding has grown exponentially to accommodate the wealthiest tourists in the city itself, but also progressively more humble ones.

Surroundings

If you must depart from Venice to Marco polo airport and use the boat called Alilaguna (as it is more direct than other types of transport), take into account that its value is not included in the Venice card and its price is around 15 euros.
