Background

From the Latin word vicus the name Viguzzolo derives from the town, a small village that probably formed around the parish church on a site that had already seen Roman settlements.

Already mentioned in documents of the 9th century, it was a free municipality and in 1278 obtained Tortonese citizenship, a concession that indicates that the town had reached a certain economic and political importance in the Tortona territory. He entered with Tortona in the Visconti possessions. With the advent of the Sforza, he was forced into public submission, under the threat of destruction. The act of submission was repaid partly with the granting of rights to the waters of the Curone and the Grue and with the honor of the title of Famous village. Granted in fief to the Fogliani of Piacenza in 1468, it remained with this family even after the passage to the Savoy.

Parish church of Santa Maria in Viguzzolo
  • 1 Parish church of Santa Maria, 39 339 5928679. Simple icon time.svgEvery second Sunday of the month from May to September, 16.00-19.00 hours and in other seasons by reservation. The parish church of Santa Maria is undoubtedly the most important monument in Viguzzolo. It is a simple Romanesque construction, with three naves, with three semicircular apses and a double sloping roof. The façade, decorated with hanging arches divided irregularly by pilasters, has a round arched door, and a circular eye probably built in a later period as the small bell gable. Inside, the naves are divided into four bays of quadrangular pillars with leaning and opposing semi-columns. In the right aisle there is access to the crypt consisting of three small naves marked by columns and stone capitals that support cross vaults. It preserves a wooden crucifix from the second half of the sixteenth century attributable to the canons of the Piedmontese-Lombard school. The head of the Christ is movable and rotates on a pin that was once hidden by his beard and real hair.
  • 2 Parish Church of the Assumption. The church is an extension (1598-1603) of the oratory of San Bartolomeo. The Baroque facade has a portal with a broken tympanum; the interior with three naves preserves a high altar from the church of San Marziano in Tortona.
  • 3 Monastery of the Annunziata. The building dates back to the 15th century; it hosted nuns of the order and rule of Sant'Agostino and was suppressed in 1770 by Pope Clement XIV. Today it is the town hall, the schools and the civic library.
  • 4 Oratory of Sant'Antonio. Seat of the Confraternity of the Holy Trinity, it preserves a valuable eighteenth-century Roccatagliata organ. A slender bell tower flanks the church. Legend has it that Sant'Antonio, to whom the oratory is dedicated, appeared in a dream to the town sexton urged him to wake up the villagers and to alert them on the occasion of the disastrous fire that destroyed the town in 1427.
  • 5 Oratory of the Beata Vergine del Gonfalone. The church is the seat of the homonymous Confraternity which houses the statue of the Madonna del Gonfalone; the fresco of Nursing Madonna brings the sbraghi procured to the painting by the bayonets of the Napoleonic soldiers who sacked the building. The oratory houses a precious Mentasti organ.
