Waihi is a small town in the Waikato region.

background

The history of the town of Waihi at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula is typical of the course of the gold rush in New Zealand. Gold was first found here in 1878, and the claims for the gold mine were made at the site Martha staked out. Around 175 tons of gold and a multiple of it as silver were mined here until the mine was shut down as unprofitable in 1952. Just as the city's population had initially grown, it has now shrunk again. When the gold price picked up again, the mine became profitable again. It is now clear that the several 100m deep pit on the outskirts of the city will be closed.
