Napier has existed since around 1850. The place populated by whalers and farmers soon became the provincial capital of Hawke’s Bay. In 1931 a strong earthquake shook the geothermally active region. Numerous buildings were destroyed in the process, the earth partly rose over 2m. New land areas rose from the sea on the coast. Young architects, students and workers from all over the country were called in to rebuild, and the new buildings were built in what was then the current one Art Deco style. Even after around 80 years, the cityscape is still dominated by this architectural style, they make a virtue out of necessity, successfully advertise these sights and design tours in style with vehicles from that time.
