The caves are on a site owned by the Maori, they also organize the tours.
- Waitomo Glowworm Cave. The cave system of the world-famous glow worm cave is very well developed and also a bit overcrowded. You enter the cave on a guided tour that takes about an hour. The access is not very spectacular at first, it begins on the top level of the stalactite cave. Then it goes on a well-developed staircase through the Tomo a few meters down. Here is the so-called. Banquet Chamber, it shows traces of soot on the ceiling from the fires of previous speleologists. Down on the third level is the 18 m high cathedral, a wide cave with good acoustics. Up to this point it is a normal stalactite cave. From here you can get to the actual spectacular part of the cave, which from Waitomo River is traversed. This is where the Fireflywhose larvae hang by the hundreds on the ceiling and give off a bluish light. Photography is prohibited in the entire cave system. The tour is now continued in the boat, the guide pulls it silently on a rope tied to the ceiling in the direction of the exit.

- Fireflies also live in the other two caves nearby. The Ruakuri cave can be walked over a length of 1.6 km, the shorter one Aranui cave is famous for its beautiful stalactite formations.
