In Yapen Islands Governorate (Kabupaten Kepulauan Yapen) around 110,000 people live on 2050 km² of land. Much of the island is covered with tropical rainforest. The WWF classifies the island, which is mountainous in the center and whose highest point is 1496 m, as an ecoregion worthy of protection. About a third of the island has been designated as a nature reserve since 1995. Cocoa and coconut palms are grown on “cash crops”.
In terms of tourism, the island is much less developed than Biak. Outside of Serui you will be dependent on your own initiative, but then you can enjoy nature in seclusion.
