Understand
The Pitcairn Islands are a group of five islands with a total area of 47 km2. Only one of them is inhabited by about fifty inhabitants (nine families), which makes it the least populated political entity in the world. The vast majority of the inhabitants are descended from the mutineers of the HMS Bounty and their wives Tahitian. The Pitcairn Islands were still home to 250 people half a century ago, and archaeologists believe Polynesians lived in Pitcairn and its neighbor Henderson until the end of the 15th century. The island was discovered by Europeans in 1767 during Philippe Carteret's exploration trip.
