Mariawald Abbey, also Mariawald Monastery or Trappist convent Mariawald is a monastery at Heimbach/ Eifel. This article also describes the area around the monastery.

background

  • Mariawald Monastery was founded in 1480 as a Cistercian priory. After the secularization in 1802 the monastery was closed. Already in the 19th century the Trappists (Cisterians from the strict observance, OCSO) were re-established.
  • The "Tridentine Rite" has been introduced for church services since the beginning of 2009; this reform has not yet been fully implemented.
  • The Mariawald monastery is the historical location of the pilgrimage picture Sorrowful Our Lady of the Forest. This is now in the parish church in Heimbach. It is the goal of Heimbach pilgrimage. The Mariawald Abbey remains a secondary goal of the Heimbach pilgrimage.
  • Large parts of the facility are handicapped accessible.
  • The car park is a popular starting point for hikes in the Eifel National Parkwhich almost completely encloses the area.

getting there

Airports

Cologne Bonn Airport and Düsseldorf International Airport can be reached by public transport within three hours during rush hour. If you arrive by train, you can switch between the routing via Kall and Schleiden-Gemünd or over Düren and Heimbach choose.

Rurseeschifffahrt

The Schwammenauel landing stage on the Rursee (also for sport boats) can be reached within 20 minutes by bus, about 1 1/2 hours on foot

By train

  • The station Heimbach (Rurtalbahn) can be reached by bus within 1/2 hour, on foot within an hour
  • The station Kall (DB) can be reached by bus on weekends in the main season within 1/2 hour, on working days within 1 1/2 hour (over Schleiden-Gemünd). Allow around 2 1/2 hours for the walk.

buses

  • The breakpoint Mariawald Monastery is served by regional bus 231, from Heimbacher Citizen bus and from the tourist bus Mäxchen (only on weekends in the main season). The bus line 231 connects Heimbach With Schleiden.
  • The stop is 1 1/2 km away House Kermeter, it is served by other buses on route 231 on weekends in the main season.
  • The stop is 3 km away Wolfgarten crossing on the B 265. It is better served, especially on working days.

Streets

  • By arrangement, riders can graze their mounts on the hotel's own horse meadow.

hike

  • Hikers can come to Mariawald on foot, for example, via the Way of the Cross from Heimbach. Other hiking trails lead from Rursee and from Wolf garden to the Mariawald monastery.

Cycling

There are bike trails off Schleiden expelled; their quality cannot be guaranteed. Cycle paths are acceptable from Rursee from the Kermeter. Significant inclines are inevitable.

Buildings

Parts of the Main building were built in the 18th century. They are not public, but can be seen clearly from the outside.

Monuments

Above the monastery is the Mariawald military cemetery. From there you have a good view of the monastery. You can also see until Rursee.

Places and paths

  • Convent forecourt
  • Way of the Cross: You can also go "backwards" from Mariawald (starting at the 14th station) to Heimbach. The top end is the path between the bookstore and the restaurant. The path leads along the Klausurmauer to the 7th station, then crosses the street (L 249) and drops off until about 1 km before the end of the village Heimbach.

Green spaces

The grounds of the abbey include forest and pasture areas that are in the Eifel National Park pass over. Since the national park does not include any private land, the abbey’s forest and grassland areas are excluded from the national park itself.

  • The monastery also produces liqueurs, chocolates and biscuits; they are offered for sale in the bookstore / monastery shop.
  • The closest competitor is the Kermeter tavern in Schleiden-Wolf garden. More restaurants can be found in Heimbach.
