history

Düren has a very old city history that goes back to the Germanic tribes. A Roman garrison was located here, and later Charlemagne had a palace built here (it was roughly on the site of today's Anna Church). Until the First World War, Düren was one of the richest cities in the empire at that time. The exceptionally beautiful city had a tram network and its own theater.

At the end of the Second World War it was devastated. With 99% of the apartments destroyed, Düren was the city in Germany hardest hit by the bombing. Today's Düren was completely rebuilt after the end of the war according to the urban planning knowledge of the time. As a result, the city center is predominantly shaped by the architecture of the 1950s. Some of the few buildings that survived the war still have traces of air raids.
