Lukla Airport - Aeroporto di Lukla

Lukla Airport

L'airport of Lukla (तेन्जिङ हिलारी विमानस्थल) (IATA: LUA) is an airport located in Nepal and is considered among the most dangerous airports in the world.

To know

Opened in 1965, in 2008 the airport was named in memory of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first climbers to climb theEverest, as well as both supporters of its construction.

Located at an altitude of 2 846 m above sea level at the foot of Everest, it is characterized by a short sloping track and by its particular location in the complex orographic context of the Himalayas which has an extremely changing climate. However, in the favorable months the airport is very popular since Lukla it is one of the inhabited centers closest to the major Himalayan peaks and mountaineers who are preparing to tackle the climbs frequently choose this location as a base. The airport is also strategic for its rapid helicopter connections with the airport of Sangboche, the closest stop to base camp from where shipments depart.

Where stay

  • K2 Lodge. The rooms are clean if not interesting. The food is quite cheap compared to most guesthouses in town and quite tasty.
  • 1 Eco Paradise Lodge, 977 38 550029. It offers spotlessly clean, if simple, rooms and a very warm and welcoming lounge / dining room overlooking the airport and mountains; very reasonable price.
  • North Face Resort. Good place at the end of the trek to spend a night before leaving Lukla in the morning for Kathmandu. Comfortable rooms with private bathrooms and catering serving healthy food. The balcony has a good view of the runway.
  • 2 Everest Summit Lodge (In front of the airport), 977 1 4371537.
