The airport is in the self-declared state ofAbkhazia and it is not yet operational even if the government has an interest in launching flights in the near future but for now it only carries out flights to a remote village and flights of the United Nations Mission Observer. Abkhazian airspace is mainly controlled by the Russian Air Force, but also by the fledgling Abkhazian Air Force, and unauthorized aircraft entering it, especially if coming from Georgia, could be shot down.
