Augst is a Swiss Municipality in the canton Basel-Country.
background
The municipality lies on the border with the canton of Aargau. The Ergolz, which flows into the Rhine here, forms the border between the two cantons. While Augst is on the western bank of the Ergolz, the Aargau is located Kaiseraugst on the eastern bank. Both localities emerged from the Roman Augusta Raurica, which was located here at the mouth of the Ergolz. Until 1442, the two localities were not yet separated and formed one place. But by drawing the border along the Ergolz, the two districts came under different rule.
