The Motorway 13 (Switzerland), at the same time Europastrasse 43, leads from St. Margrethen through the Rhine valley Chur as a road over the San Bernardino Pass to Bellinzonawhere to go to the Autobahn 2, the Gotthard route, meets. Southwest of Bellinzona it continues as the main road through the Magadino plain and becomes a four-lane expressway again at Tenero until it Locarno drives around in a two-lane tunnel and turns off Ascona as the main street on the west bank of the Lake Maggiore to the Swiss-Italian border south of Brissago continues.
This article only describes the section from St. Margrethen to Reichenau, which has been developed as a motorway. For the route from Reichenau along the Hinterrhein and through the San Bernadino tunnel and through the Moesa valley (Misox) see the article San Bernardino Pass.

particularities
Like all national roads in Switzerland, the motorway requires a vignette. An annual vignette is required, which costs CHF 40 (just under EUR 37). The vignette also covers the use of tunnels (such as the San Bernardino tunnel).
The A 13 has no direct connection to the German or Austrian motorway network. Access can be from Lindau / Bregenz via the Austrian federal highway 202 to St. Margrethen, but also through the Pfänder tunnel and on the Austrian Rheintal / Walgau motorway (A 14) toll-free to the Hohenems exit and then through Diepoldsau to exit 3 Widnau.
