Motorway 4 (Switzerland) - Autobahn 4 (Schweiz)

A4Swiss.svg

The Swiss Autobahn 4 (A4) begins shortly after the German-Swiss border near Thayngen, not far from the end of the German Federal highway 81 at Gottmadingen, initially as the A 4 road, crosses the city Schaffhausen with two tunnels and crosses the Rhine on a cable-stayed bridge. It sits down as a “mini-highway” past Andelfingen to the junction Winterthur-North away. From there on, she bypasses the greater area Zurich together with the Autobahn 1 north and northwest. At the junction Limmattal it separates from the A1 and runs together with the Autobahn 3 to the south to the Zurich-West junction. From there it runs independently and fully developed through the 4.5 km long Islisberg tunnel further south to the city Schwyz. There it becomes the A 4 motorway again and bypasses it Fountain. Then she goes to the AxenstrasseH2 about that on the east bank of the Lake Lucerne leads to Altdorf UR, where the Autobahn 2, the Gotthard route.

The total length of the motorway, including the double guides with other motorways and the not fully developed sections, is around 165 km.

traffic

Like all national roads in Switzerland, the motorway is subject to a vignette (also on the sections that are not signposted as autobahns but as motorways, only the section from the Thayngen border crossing to the Thayngen exit) is exempt and toll-free. An annual vignette is required, which costs CHF 40 (just under EUR 37).

Once the connections to the German autobahn network and the expansion of Axenstrasse are completed, the autobahn will be the fastest and shortest connection from the metropolitan area Stuttgart to the Gotthard Pass be.
