Rail passes in Europe - Bahnpässe in Europa

In the list are Pass offers and network maps of European railway companies compiled. Couches and sleeping cars almost always cost extra. High-speed trains are sometimes excluded or cost surcharges, often including a reservation fee.

In many cases, not everyone is allowed to buy them, only foreigners. That is noted with A. for foreigners and E. for residents. The price examples are from February 2020.

Balkan Flexipass

Railway lines in the Balkans.

Applies to the railway lines in Southeast Europe from Bosnia-Herzegovina (Republika Srpska), Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania (only CFR Călători), Serbia and all of Turkey.

Price examples: Adults / young people (up to 26), 3 days: 1st class € 80/63, 2nd class: € 60/45. Seniors (60+): 10 days, I: € 168, II: € 125.

Rail travel in these countries is comparatively cheap. The pass only pays off if you can drive a long distance per day. Since moves are not very frequent, you should calculate carefully.

The possibility of using the Attica Group's Mediterranean ferries makes the pass a little more attractive: Ancona, Bari or Venice to Corfu-Igoumenitsa-Patras (no train stations in the Greek cities). Here you have to pay additional port fees, seasonal and fuel surcharges.

Species: 1st and 2nd class, each 3, 5, 7, 10 or 15 days within 2 months. (Travel agencies often only sell 1st class pass online.)

Restrictions:A. Not valid on private railways in Romania. (The direct trains Thessaloniki-Belgrade and Thessaloniki-Bucharest will not operate in winter 2020.)

Discounts: Children (4-12): 50%. Youth: 25-33%. Seniors: 15-20%. Some domestic ferries from Piraeus: 30%. Greek tourist train Pelion 20%, Diakopto museum railway surcharge free. Discounted entry to museums in Macedonia. The high-speed trains in Turkey are free of charge.

Surcharges: Purchase of the pass outside the participating countries approx. 15%. Couchette car surcharge 8-10 euros. IC surcharge in Greece.

Benelux Flexi Pass:

Species: The Benelux Eurail / Interrail Pass is a "one-country pass" for these European offers and is valid for 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 days within a month.

Bulgaria

In Bulgaria the Balkan Flexi Pass. Otherwise there are no network cards for inland. Small groups of 3-6 people receive a 15% discount. Otherwise there is City Star-Deals for outward and return journeys to neighboring countries, which can be up to 50% cheaper for small groups.

Germany

Pass offers in Germany are only available for groups of 1 to 5 people on local trains. In order to travel longer distances, you have to change trains more often. Due to the sharp drop in punctuality since privatization, connections are often missed.

In addition to the basic price, there is a surcharge for each additional traveler. Children up to 14 count half. On weekdays, the validity is limited to departure after 9 a.m. This applies across Germany Across the country ticket, which costs from € 44 in 2020. There are also country tickets as regional offers at prices between € 23 and € 44.

There are additional ones in Bavaria, which is large in terms of area Regional offers. The "Rheinland-Pfalz Ticket plus Luxemburg" and the "Niedersachsen-Ticket plus Groningen" are cross-border. The privatized Länderbahn (alex, oberpfalzbahn, trilex, vogtlandbahn, vlexx, waldbahn) also offers combination tickets to the Czech Republic. However, since autumn 2019, due to a lack of staff, which is due to the miserable working conditions, it can no longer serve all scheduled routes.

Greece

There hasn't been any since 2019 Interrail Plus- More passports with which you could use the ferries to Italy.

Rail traffic on the Peloponnese has been completely discontinued.

City Star

Species: Round trip between Thessaloniki and Sofia for small groups of up to 5 people, at least 1 adult and 1 child. Departure from Thessaloniki is only 5.50 a.m. every day.

Discount: Students with ID.

Greek Island Pass

Also known as Attica Group Ferry Pass or Greek Island Hopping Pass, offers the possibility to use five freely selectable internal Greek ferry routes (without Ionian Islands) of the shipping companies Blue Star or Hellenic Seaways for € 90. It is sold through Eurail / Interrail. Their age limits apply for discounts.

Great Britain

Brit Rail Pass

The country-wide adultBrit Rail Pass costs € 524 for 1 month. The cheapest option is valid for 2 days and costs € 95.

There are a bewildering number of regional ones BritRail Passes. They are available for 1st or 2nd class. What they have in common is that they usually do not apply before 9.15 a.m. on weekdays. Anyone can use the variants of the North of England Passes and the ScotRail Passes acquire. The other offers are not available to residents of Great Britain.

Many passes are also available as a mobile version, i.e. you show a QR code on your smartphone.

Discounts: Winter (November 1st - February 28th): up to 20%. Children (5-15): 50%. Young people (up to 26) and small groups (3-6 people) up to 20%. Seniors (from 60) up to 15%. Owner of a Railcard: differently.

Italy

In addition to Trenitalia, high-speed trains also run the Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori under the brand name italo.

There hasn't been any since 2019 Interrail Plus- More passports with which you could use the ferries to Greece.

Trenitalia Pass

Species: You acquire 3, 4, 7 or 10 long-distance journeys within a certain period of time. There are only eTickets. The long-distance and high-speed trains Frecce, FrecciaLink, Intercity, Intercity Night and EuroCity can be used (if they operate on Italian territory). If you change, a new journey begins. There are classes Easy (2nd), Comfort and Executive. Prices range between € 129 (3 rides, young people, "Easy") and € 594 (10 rides, adult, "Executive").

Discounts: Adults can take two children (4-12) with them for free. The senior prices (from 60) are 12-15% cheaper. Young people (12-28) receive approx. 25%. The age at the time of purchase applies, which can be up to 11 months in advance.

Restrictions:A. not even for Italians living abroad. Not valid on the burner- Route served by a regional company.

Trenitalia Pass

Ireland

Ulster's route network is part of that of the Republic of Ireland, but is operated by Translink operated.

The Tourist Travel Passes of the bus company [Tourist Travel Pass Bus Eirann] are cheaper.

Trekker

Species: 4 days from the solution day on the Iarnród Éireann route network for adults.

Restrictions:E. Only available at the counter.

Explorer

Species: 5 selectable days within 15 on the Iarnród Éireann route network. 2nd class adult price (default): 160 €

Discounts: 50% for children.

Austria

The network card for long-distance traffic is valid for one year on all routes AustriaCard. At the normal price it costs € 2998, a little cheaper for soldiers, seniors, etc.

The ÖBB Vorteilscard Jugend (up to 26) for 19 € or ÖBB Vorteilscard Senior (from 65) 29 € per year can pay off for foreigners.

Central European Triangle Pass

This is not a typical pass, but a special combination ticket for journeys between Vienna – Prague – Budapest or between Prague – Vienna – Salzburg. The pass is not issued to people residing in Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic and, at a price of € 126, is generally of little interest to Europeans. Info in English.

Romania

In Romania the Balkan Flexi Pass. Otherwise there are no nationwide pass offers. The Weekend ticket Provides discounts of 15-35% if you book 2-4 return trips on weekends at the same time. On routes that are used by both the state-owned CFR and private companies, e.g. Softrans, Regio Calatori and Astra Trans Carpatic, the latter are usually 10-15% cheaper.

Switzerland

Lake Constance ticket

Species: Day tickets for one to three zones (east, west and south) on buses and trains in the Lake Constance region. In addition the ferries Friedrichshafen - Romanshorn and / or Konstanz - Meersburg. One zone per day 29 sfr. 3 day pass 60-74 sfr.

Restrictions: Zone south (Appenzellerland) only in combination with another. Not valid for scheduled shipping and the catamaran. The national regulations for disabled people are not valid in cross-border traffic.

Discounts: For holders of national discount cards. Family tickets ("small group"): 1-2 adults with up to 4 children.

Swiss Travel Pass

Species:Swiss Travel Pass 3, 4, 8 or 15 consecutive days of free travel by train, bus and boat, including local public transport. 2nd class 232-513 sfr.

Swiss Travel Pass Flex, 3, 4, 8 or 15 selectable days within 30. 2nd class 267-563 sfr., 1st class 424-890 sfr.

The Swiss Travel Pass (Flex) Youth for young people up to 26 is 15% cheaper.

Restrictions:A, not even for residents of Liechtenstein.

Discounts: Free entry to around 500 museums. Mountain excursions: Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos, with others up to 50%. Children (6-15) travel free when accompanied by a parent if they are the Swiss Family Card to have. They are available free of charge on request.

Surcharges: At the Flex-Pass partially for reservations and panorama trains (Glacier Express, Bernina Express, Gotthard Panorama Express and Palm Express).

Long-distance buses are cheaper.

RENFE Spain Pass

Species: 4, 6, 8 or 10 journeys to be used within a month on long-distance trains are purchased (media distancia) and high-speed trains (AVE).

There is 1st class preferente and 2. turista. 4 trips in 2nd class cost € 195, 10 trips in 1st class cost € 560.

Restrictions:A. On local trains (cercanias) only 3 hours after arrival / before departure of the long-distance connection. Reservations are required for AVE.

Discounts: Pass for children (4-13) approx. 30%.

Surcharges: Couchette cars.

Prague is an end point of the one mentioned in Austria Central European Triangle Pass.

Day ticket

Species:Celodenní jízdenka, applies until midnight on the day of resolution on the routes of the state CD also in the express trains R. There is a national variant for 579 CZK or regional ones for prices between 179 and 239 CZK.

Cross-border combinations Celodenní jízdenka Polsko cost 259-309 CZK depending on the region.

Weekend ticket for groups

The Skupinová víkendová jízdenka for up to 5 people on one day at the weekend costs for the whole country 679 CZK, regionally 229-319 CZK.

Summer ticket

That is valid Jízdenka na léto for 7 or 14 consecutive days in the period from July 1st to August 31st only in 2nd class. Prices (2020): 1 week 790 CZK, 2 weeks 1190 CZK.
