Geographical notes

Barcis rises in Valcellina, in the Friulian Dolomites, on the shores of the artificial lake of the same name. The basin where the town and its hamlets arise is closed to the north by Mount Resettùm (2067m), to the west by the Crep Nudo (2207m) and Messer (2230m) mountains, to the south by the Cavallo (2251m) and Cjastelât mountains. (1641 m), to the east from the Raut (2026 m) and Fara (1342 m) mountains.

Background

Barcis is almost certainly a toponym of ancient Celtic origin with the meaning of hut, house (barg), or mountain (berg), like the many similar toponyms of northern Italy. Initially it was a locality of ancient Cellis, which, due to a landslide, was destroyed in 1314 and then rebuilt on the banks of the Cellina river.

In November 1917 it was at the center of fierce fighting between the Italian and German troops, especially defended by the Val d'Arroscia alpine battalion. It was destroyed by a fire in 1606 a first time and a second time due to the war in 1944.

In 1954 the dam was built for hydroelectric purposes which determined the formation of the lake which with its surreal emerald green characterizes this small tourist resort.

How to orient yourself

The municipal territory includes, in addition to the capital Barcis, the hamlets Arcola, Armasio, Cimacosta, Fontane, Guata, Losie, Mighet, Molassa, Pentina, Pezzeda, Ponte Antoi, Portuz, Predaia, Ribe, Roppe and Vallata.

On the train

  • 4 Railway station (in Maniago). It is located on the railway line Sacile - Pinzano. From 6 July 2012 to 9 December 2017, the railway service was replaced by self-rides due to the diversion of a train due to a landslide on the railway site near the Meduno station.
With the partial reopening of the line, from 10 December 2017 the station is again served by Regional trains in service between Sacile and Maniago. In addition to serving the city in which it is located, the station plays an important role as a hub for the surrounding valleys.

By bus

  • 5 Bus station (to Maniago). In the square outside the station there is the bus station that connects the city to other locations, such as Spilimbergo, Pordenone and the surrounding valleys of Val Cellina and Val Colvera.
There are also busses run by Trenitalia, coinciding with the arriving trains, to reach the schools of Maniago and for the stations in the direction of Gemona del Friuli not yet served by the train.
