Bardolino (Bardolìn in Veneto) is a city of Province of Verona in Veneto.

To know

The name of Bardolino could derive from a Latin term of Gaelic derivation: Bardus, cantor or, another hypothesis from a Germanic patronymic, Pardali or Bardali, daughter of King Aulete founder of Mantua.

Geographical notes

Bardolino rises on the eastern coast of Lake Garda, 30 km from Verona, on a hilly territory squeezed between the lake, to the west, and the morainic hill, to the east, which separates the lake itself from the Adige valley, at the point where it flows into the Po Valley.

Churches

  • Church of San Zeno. From the second half of the 9th century, it has a Latin cross plan with barrel vaults on the side arms and cross vaults on the lantern. In the side arms original decorations are preserved. It was one of the few churches in the Verona area left intact by the earthquake of 1117.
  • Church of San Severo. From the 11th and 12th centuries, in Romanesque style. It has a facade divided into three sectors with a porch. The bell tower has a spire. There are frescoes from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. The crypt is from the early Middle Ages.
  • Monastery of San Colombano. From the 11th century, dependent on the abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio.
  • Parish church of Santa Maria. Built in Cisano in the twelfth century on a previous church of the late seventh century in turn built on a pagan temple. The interior was redone, irreparably damaging the structure in the 19th century.
  • Church of San Vito (Location Cortelline). Ask for the 18th century.
  • Church of San Nicolò. Built on a project by the architect Bartolomeo Giuliari between 1830 and 1847, it replaced San Severo as a parish.

The Wine Museum was founded in 1991 at the behest of Gaetano Zeni.The structure was built inside the same Cantina F.lli Zeni (year of foundation 1870), testifying to the strong bond that has united this family for five generations to the wine culture . The museum is divided into thematic areas, each dedicated to a different aspect of the processes of the wine production chain, from cultivation in the vineyard to the bottling phase. The exhibits are for the most part original and therefore actually used over the years by family members. In this sense, this museum stands out for being one of a kind. Multilingual exhibition panels describe the objects of greatest interest and then end the journey with a video narrating the history of the Zeni family in relation to the territory and its production. Groups can be welcomed by reservation and enjoy a guided tour in language (for a fee) not only inside the Museum but also along the other thematic areas of the entire Cellar, including the Barricaia Room in which guided tastings are organized. Adjacent to the Museum are the Vinoteca and the Sales Point, where you can taste and buy all the wines produced by Cantina F.lli Zeni. Also available grappas, oil and balsamic vinegar.
