The life of the town always passed away from the great events of history, but close to the small stories of the thousands of pilgrims who passed through here, along the Via Francigena, to go to Rome. In Bardone they found the Pieve to welcome them for devotions and for refreshments. Its size was always kept small, if not tiny. During the great plague of 1630 it was struck by the loss of 46 inhabitants; in 1837 it had 261 inhabitants divided into 39 families.

The Pieve is mentioned as early as 1004 by a document that appoints the titular archpriest. The first nucleus of the sacred building, however, is dated to the ninth century, according to the discoveries made during and restorations in 2000 on the occasion of the Jubilee.

The importance of the Pieve reached its peak between 1200 and the first half of 1400, a period in which the ecclesiastical documents attribute the supremacy over about fifteen chaplaincies that depended on it. During the last restoration, excavations have highlighted the remains of a pre-existing building that dates back to the 7th century.

The current church, whose appearance after the alterations that took place over the centuries is to be placed between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, has on the right side an entrance with a sandstone portal that leads into the church from the lawn that surrounds it, surrounded by a wall fence. The building has a single nave with an apse and side chapels. In a small room next to the apse, an essay of the excavations carried out in 2000 has been left, which highlighted the ancient wall structures of the previous church, as well as numerous burial tombs and a dozen ossuaries.

Sculptures of the Antelamic school

Inside, two column-bearing lions, once at the foot of the portal. Among the sculptures of the Antelamic school that are kept there, the Deposition from the Cross whose sculptor treats the theme with extreme realism, for example he provides Giuseppe D'Arimatea with two large blacksmith's pincers to detach the body of Christ from the cross. Other sculptural works are the Blessing Christ and a female figure holding a holy water stoup that presents diabolical images on the tub.

The Romanesque slabs and statues in the past had already been attributed to one of the main aids of Benedetto Antelami, the Master of Santa Margherita, also author of the sculptures present in the parish church of Fornovo. Thanks also to studies on stone material, the Bardone slabs have been recognized as part of the Fornovo pulpit, dismembered in 1578 on the occasion of the renewal of the liturgical furnishings promoted by the Counter-Reformation.

The archetype is represented by the pulpit of the Cathedral of Parma, made by Antelami in 1178, which clearly refers to the slab with the Deposition of Bardone. The slab of the Glorification of Santa Margherita depicts the Saint with long braids as in the slab of Fornovo, kneeling next to Christ in glory and blessing.
