I. district or Bel-Buda

Bel-Buda officially Várkerület (lit. Castle District) includes Vízíváros, Fő utca, Castle Hill (Budai Várnegyed), Taban (Tabán) and Krisztinaváros. The borders of the district are the hill of Gellért, the South station (Déli) and its northern end, the Margaret bridge. Administratively, it is the I. arrondissement which adjoins the II. and the XII. in the North-West, The area of the hills (Hegyvidek), to the south the XI. (Újbuda) and to the east the Danube, with the V. arrondissement (Belváros).
Castle hill, known as Várhegy in Hungarian, was inhabited from the 13the century, after a Mongol attack that led the citizens of Buda to seek a neighborhood easier to defend. The Hungarian royal court also decided to settle at the southern end of the hill. Towards the XIVe century, there were about 8,000 inhabitants in Buda. After a period (1541-1686) of domination Turkish and a siege of 75 days left Buda in ruins, the Austrians counted only 300 people there by taking possession of the place. It won't be the last attack on Castle Hill. In 1849 and 1945, the district was again attacked. Completely surrounded German forces held out for almost a month in January 1945, which was the city's thirty-first siege. Since 1987, the district has been on the list of Unesco World Heritage. The three main parts of the castle district (Várnegyed) are: the Castle-Palace of Buda, the area around Saint George's Square (Szent György tér) and the historic residential area.

The two lines

cross the Danube from Pest towards Buda. The Subway stops at 3 major urban transport junction point Batthyány tér (admire the view of the parliament before taking the suburban train HEV for Szentendre), Széll Kálmán tér (formerly Moszkva tér, entry point to the castle hill) and Déli pályaudvar (South Station).
Circulate
This area is small enough to be explored on foot. However, if you are tired, you can hop on a 5, 11 or 86 bus which has several stops inside the Bel-Buda district, or one of the two trams: 19 and 41 which runs along the bank of Buda. There is also a parallel cycle path. Tram 18 could be useful for exploring Tabán and Krisztinaváros.
In Buda Castle district, you can use bus 16 (formerly known as Várbusz) which has several stops inside the Castle district as well as overpriced coaches are also waiting.
As private cars are not allowed to enter the Castle Hill area, the only possibilities are public transport, walking or taxi.

Castle Hill
- 1 Matthias Fountain (Mátyás Szökőkút) (on the west forecourt of the palace) Mon.- Sun. : 0 h - 24 h. free. – This spectacular fountain shows a group of hunters led by King Mathias Corvin with dogs, a slain deer, Galeotto Marzio with a hawk, and Szép Ilonka with a doe. This group of people stand between the rocks, the water flowing into a basin. The fountain was created by sculptor Alajos Stróbl. The dead deer was modeled on a majestic deer killed in 1896 by poachers in a forest belonging to Stróbl.
- 2 Monument of Prince Eugène de Savoy (Savoyai Jenő herceg lovas emélműve) Buda royal palace (On the Danube terrace) Mon.- Sun. : 0 h - 24 h. Free. – The equestrian statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy sits on the Danube Terrace in the foreground above Budapest. This neo-baroque statue was created by sculptor József Róna for the town of Zenta, but the town could not pay the price. The monument was redeemed in 1900 to be placed where it currently stands as a temporary solution until the equestrian statue of King Franz Joseph is completed. The statue of François-Joseph having never been completed, Prince Eugene remained on its plinth. The plinth is decorated with two bronze reliefs showing earthworks at Zenta and the decisive cavalry charge during the Battle of Zenta in 1697.
- 3 Statue of a horse trainer (a hortobágyi Csikós szobra) (next to the Matthias Fountain) Mon.- Sun. : 0 h - 24 h. Free. – The statue of a horse trainerHortobágy originally stood in front of the riding school on the former terrace ofÚjvilág. It is the work of György Vastagh in 1901. The statue was shown at the World's Fair in Paris from 1900. The damaged statue was removed during the 1960s, but was later restored and erected on the west forecourt of the palace in 1983.
- 4 Fountain of the fishing children (Szökőkút Horgászó Gyerekekkel) (on the Danube terrace) Mon.- Sun. : 0 h - 24 h. Free. – It is a 1912 work by sculptor Károly Senyey. It represents two children struggling with a fish. The work of the fishing net is remarkable. The fountain was removed in 1955 and re-erected at Rákóczi tér in Pest, but it was returned to its original place in 1976 and was restored in 2001.
- 5 Court of the lions (Oroszlános Udvar) (Indoor court) Mon.- Sun. : 0 h - 24 h. Free. – Two pairs of lions guard the monumental portal leading to the Court of the Lions. The four statues are the 1901 works of sculptor János Fadrusz. Animals positioned upright on the outside of the door are menacing, while those positioned inside are calm and dignified. A lion was smashed in half during the war, but it was recreated in the 1950s.
