Birkenfeld (Nahe) is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate. It lies between the Hunsrück and the Near. In the city of Birkenfeld, both the administration of the Birkenfeld district and the administration of the municipality of the same name are located.

Birch field is located in the Hunsrück-Hochwald national park region between the Hunsrück and the Nahe valley. Finds show that this area was inhabited as early as the Iron Age. From 100 BC. until 400 AD if the Romans ruled here, then they were driven out by the Teutons. The first documentary mention of the place Birkenfeld comes from the year 981, it indicates a donation that was made around the year 700.

In the 13th century the village of Birkenfeld was owned by the Counts of Sponheim. In 1332 Birkenfeld received city rights. In the following centuries the town changed hands repeatedly. In 1797 Birkenfeld came to France. In 1817 the city came into the possession of the Grand Duke of Oldenburg. A number of buildings that characterize the cityscape date from this time.

Birkenfeld has been the administrative seat of the Birkenfeld district since 1947. The city is also the administrative seat of the Birkenfeld community, to which a total of 30 formerly independent local communities belong. However, it is the largest city in the district Idar-Oberstein, in which some administrative offices are located.
