Mouth of Magra

Mouth of Magra is a seaside resort of the Riviera di Levante in the territory of Ameglia in the province of Spice.

To know

Bocca di Magra passed to the honors of history immediately after the war, when some of the most famous poets, writers, artists and writers of the time began to frequent it, kidnapped by its appearance and its atmosphere, naturally intact and perfectly mixed with the activities of the people. of the place, marked by the natural rhythm of the seasons, by the redundant lapping of the waves and by the slow flow of the Magra river. Naturally there were no hotels and the locals rented the most modern part of their house, usually the ground floor, to tourists, even illustrious or at least known, and for 3-4 months they retired to more modest homes. Do not miss a small walk that leads to the monastery at whose doors you can admire a centuries-old walnut tree. Nearby, with another hike (but you can also get there by car) the former villa Fabbricotti with adjoining garden sloping down to the sea. Among the different essences of the Mediterranean flora you can also notice the majestic strawberry trees. During the 2nd war, the villa became a German military garrison and was therefore bombed and sacked by the population who could not stand the presence of the Germans.

Some of its most famous visitors were Cesare Pavese, Giulio Einaudi, Vittorio Sereni, Eugenio Montale, Elio Vittorini, Marguerite Duras, Franco Fortini this community of progressives made the publishing fortune of Giulio Enaudi who became one of the most assiduous visitors to the locality, but not only; many others chose her as their inspirational muse, sometimes dedicating small works to her, short quotations (of this area they even spoke Petrarch is Boccaccio) or entire poems, as Montale did in his "The return".

A largely uncontaminated area of the hills still hosts: grouse, foxes and other small mammals. In the undergrowth of Mediterranean pines it is not difficult to find edible mushrooms of the porcini family.

Halfway between Liguria is Tuscany, a perfect borderland, it still maintains its peace and quiet today splendid panorama on the marble peaks of the Apuan Alps, continuous source of inspiration for all those who continue to attend and love it.

Bocca di Magra is still today a quiet and typical seaside village on the border between Liguria and Tuscany converted from fishing to tourism, always maintaining the harbor area as the nerve center, which today hosts boats and vessels of various sizes, both for transit and annual parking, as well as for charter and rental.

Almost all of its inhabited area is located in one Limited traffic zone, so take care of leave your car in the parking lots, moreover very close (from 50 to 300m). The restricted traffic area makes it almost nil the passage of cars inside, transforming it into a wonderful pedestrian area on the banks of the river, with a wonderful view of the Apuan Alps.

The beaches, one equipped and the other free, of sand and small rounded river pebbles, can be reached on foot in a few minutes, but there are also rocks for lovers of the rocky coast. Their singularity is that they are beaches with… views of the Alps! In fact, Bocca di Magra has the chain of the Apuan Alps right in front of it, which, with their white marble peaks, seem to be covered with snow even in the height of summer.

In the village there are also a church (S.Andrea), a post office, tobacconist / newsagent, bakery, fishing and bait shop, grocery store, ATM, hairdresser for ladies and clothing / fashion shops. At the public gardens you will also find the landing pier of the tourist boats, which can take you to the other bank of the river and take you to the other villages of the nearby Golfo dei Poeti or to the wilder beaches, reachable only from the sea or from the paths that branch off on the promontory of Montemarcello.

How to keep in touch

Around

  • Ameglia - A few km from Bocca di Magra stands this small and picturesque village, with its typical and narrow red brick alleys that converge to the large medieval castle, at whose court a very pleasant one is held in the summer outdoor cinema.
  • Montemarcello - Right above Bocca di Magra, on the top of the mountain of the same name, this millenary village awaits you, elected among the Most beautiful villages in Italy it was originally born as an ancient Roman military camp, which overlooks the entire Gulf and the Tuscan coast.
  • Lerici - The beating heart of the Gulf of Poets is just 10 km from Bocca di Magra and can be reached by sea transport services. Lerici was chosen as the muse of immortal poets of the caliber of Percy and Mary Shelley, or Lord Byron. Here you can take the pleasant seafront promenade or leave for the Cinque Terre or Portofino, always by sea.
  • Tellaro - Also elected among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and very close to Lerici, its municipality of belonging, it is certainly one of the most beautiful pearls of the Gulf of Poets; not only for the typical Ligurian nature of its buildings but also for its surprising proximity to the sea, which forces the houses closest to the shore to close the windows on rough days, so as not to let the splashes of the sea waves get inside.
  • Portovenere - Another priceless jewel of the Gulf of Poets, declared heritage UNESCO since 1997, you cannot miss his visit. Immortalized in the lines of Petrarch and so dear to Lord Byron, he will be able to captivate you with his unusual and poignant beauty. • Sarzana - One name among many, to represent all the splendid villages in the hinterland of the Val di Magra; each with its historic center and its own traditions, Sarzana is perhaps the best known for its numerous shops and restaurants, its pastry art and its fortress, place of countless concerts and summer festivals, including the very famous Festival of the Mind, in early September.
  • Five lands - Little remains to say about Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, all heritage UNESCO since 1997 and reachable both by sea and by train, starting directly from Bocca di Magra or from the railway station of La Spezia.
