Bogatynia (former German name: Reichenau in Saxony) is a small town in Upper Lusatia in the Polish voivodeship Lower Silesia, at the border triangle with Germany and the Czech Republic.

background

Bogatynia or Reichenau is located in the historical region of Upper Lusatia and until 1945 belonged to the Saxon district of Zittau. As a result of the border being drawn along the Oder-Neisse line, the Bogatynia area forms the most south-westerly “tip” of Poland, which has only a narrow connection to the Polish heartland and is otherwise surrounded by the Czech Republic and Germany. Lignite has been mined in the area since the 18th century. However, since 1962 the Turów opencast mine has been massively expanded, several places around Bogatynia have fallen victim and a “lunar landscape” has arisen north and west of the city.
