Background
After the Ligurians and the Romans, Burgum Albinganeum (Borgio) and Veretium (Verezzi) were in the possession of the Bishop of Albenga, then of the Abbey of San Pietro in Varatella a Toirano in 1076 to finally become possession of the Del Carretto of Ligurian final in 1212. They became a territory subject to Genoa with the donation that Pope Urban VI made of it, together with other centers, to the doge. The Genoese Republic endowed Borgio with a fortification in 1588: the tower and fort still exist. Contended by the Savoy, subjected to Napoleon, the two centers finally became Savoy and followed the history of the whole region up to the Unification.

- 1 Parish Church of San Pietro, St. Peter's Square. The church was built on the remains of the ancient castle of Burgum Albinganeum in 1789 on a project by Giacomo Barella, with the completion of the works in a period between 1806 and 1808. It took the title of parish from the already existing church of Santo Stefano, originally dedicated to St. Peter and now a sanctuary, located inside the local cemetery. A few years later - in 1814 - the church was visited by Pope Pius VII on his return from French captivity.
- The church has a single nave, with six side chapels; the facade is neoclassical, with the main door flanked by four Corinthian columns. Among the preserved works, a canvas depicting St. Peter in the apse area.
- Church of the Gesù Redentore.
- Watchtower. It was built in 1564 during the Genoese domination.

- 2 Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, Via Soccorso. Already named after St. Peter the Apostle and then St. Stephen, it is a religious building located inside the cemetery of the Borgio village. The church was the ancient parish seat of the locality, later transferred to the more central church of San Pietro. The ancient building, originally dedicated to the apostle Peter, was built thanks to the Benedictine monks in the 9th century along the Roman road that descended from the valley of the Bottasano stream. Now incorporated in the boundaries of the local cemetery of Borgio, the church was under the religious dependence of the abbey of San Pietro in Varatella, near Toirano.
- It became an oratory dedicated to Santo Stefano and the seat of the local brotherhood starting from 1808 with the transfer of the title of parish to the new church of San Pietro located in the historic center of Borgio. It will be Pope John XXIII in 1960 to erect the church to the title of Sanctuary with the new dedication to the Madonna del Buon Consiglio.
- The current architectural appearance of the place of worship dates back to the late Middle Ages, with the 14th century brick bell tower with two floors of mullioned windows. The interior has three naves with pointed arches on Romanesque columns and cubic capitals dating back to the thirteenth century, perhaps dating back to the first plant of the church. It preserves traces of frescoes from the 14th-15th century, the same century as the polygonal apse.
In Verezzi
- Parish church of San Martino Vescovo. The parish church was built in the first half of the 17th century, in the years from 1637 to 1645.
- Church of Sant'Agostino, Piazza Sant'Agostino. The building dates back to the 14th century; it is home to the annual theater festival.

- Sanctuary of Maria Regina (St. Mary Magdalene). Known in ancient times as the oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena, the building will be built in the early seventeenth century. Inside, with a single nave and in Baroque style, there is a statue of the Madonna Regina with Jesus and angels, dated 1958 and the work of the sculptor Luigi Santifaller from Ortisei; by the same artist the statues of the saints Joachim and Anna, Jesus and St. Joseph. The last internal restoration dates back to 1957.
- Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. Baroque building from 1621.
- Chapel of the Fields. Located along the municipal road that from Verezzi leads to the Finale hamlet of Gorra. Perhaps already present in a period before the 11th century, today's structure, as evidenced by an inscription carved in the lintel of the entrance door, dates back to 1606. Around the 17th century it will be an integral part of the underlying tower Sassetti, the latter incorporated into the Verezzine walls and seat of the captain and soldiers in the service of the marquisate of The final. The structure was recovered around the sixties of the twentieth century.

- Caves of Borgio Verezzi (Valdemino). The caves, called Valdemino, are a classic example of a karst phenomenon, the structure of which was generated over time by the slow erosion of water through the rock. Already in ancient times it seems that there was knowledge of some cavities in the Borgese territory, especially due to connected hydraulic phenomena such as the "disappearances" in the subsoil, in some sections, of the Batorezza river, due to the presence of the Roggetto river gushing from a rocky cleft of the village of Borgio or even for a small internal lake below the church of San Pietro.
- In 1933 [1], three boys from Borgio, following the water of the stream, discovered the caves by entering the first room. The discovery, however, perhaps also due to the historical context close to the Second World War, did not resonate until 1951 when the Ingauno Speleological Group undertook a scrupulous inspection of these caves which wind for a few kilometers, between rooms and galleries, under the inhabited area of Borgio. The first tourist route was built, officially open to the public in 1970.
- The tourist route of the caves is about 800 m. They present very varied environments with limestone forms that intrigue, including for example some stalactites crooked that seem to go against gravity, even if in reality it is the cave that has moved over the millennia. No human remains have been found in these caves. Instead, there are bone finds of animals (rhino, elephant, tiger, crocodile, bear, mammoth) that lived in the Liguria over half a million years ago.
Events and parties
Borgio Verezzi Theater Festival |
The Borgio Verezzi Theater Festival was founded by Enrico Rembado and Maria Valentinotti Rossi in 1967, as a local tourism initiative which, over time, gained prestige until it established itself in the field of national festivals. The Festival has always been held in the summer period in the ancient village of Verezzi, mainly in the months of July / August, staging the classics par excellence (including Carlo Goldoni, William Shakespeare, Luigi Pirandello); later it was decided to propose a guiding theme to combine the classics with contemporary or unusual shows (certainly worth mentioningHell and the Purgatory Dante, set in the old fossil quarries of the Verezzina hill, an innovative and decidedly suggestive theatrical journey). |
