Breisach on the Rhine is a city on the Upper Rhine on the German-French border in Kaiserstuhl.

background

The region around Breisach was settled early on. The Romans followed the Celts, then came the Alemanni. The Zähringers resided here around the year 1100. Under the rule of the Habsburgs, Breisach received city rights in 1273. In the following period the rulership changed several times. Towards the end of the Thirty Years' War, Breisach came into French possession for a few decades, after which the city again belonged to Upper Austria. In 1806 Breisach came to the Grand Duchy of Baden.

The formerly independent communities of Gündlingen, Niederrimsingen and Oberrimsingen belong to the city of Breisach.

Neighboring communities on the German side of the Rhine are Vogtsburg, Your singing, Merdingen, Freiburg, Bad Krozingen and Hartheim. The neighboring towns are on the French banks of the Rhine Biesheim, Volgelsheim and Bird green.

Breisach is on the cross-border tourist route Green Road - Route Verte.
